Many may remember Josh, he was the Sports Editor for the Vidette a few years ago. He is now the Tampa Bay Rays best reporter for The Athletic. What an awful thing to go through.

I was called a name while playing tennis in college by a group of every race you could imagine. I need to protest because I hurt now. I am going to start a social platform and blast anyone that doesn't look or think like me

When I played basketball at the rec, they called me Bill Lambeer. I was nasty, strong as a mofo, set mean screens without moving my feet, rebound and block out, played fast, and played smart. When I played football down in the south while growing up, they called me Butch Woolfolk, my nickname was Butch. This was right at the time he played for the Giants. I am glad we did not have social media back then. I took these as compliments. If he did not like what was happening, then he could have spoken up at that moment with the people who was doing it, handled his business, and moved on. But did he?

Josh continues to speak out, as he should.

Yeah that's almost the same thing. Nice victim shaming.
Tre gave his experience. I gave my experience. We have no context around Linsanity. A major difference thus far seems to be the reaction to being given a nickname while playing a sport.

I was given the nickname of Bill Lambeer because overall, I sucked at basketball, and could do a couple of things well and others not so much. They were not comparing me and my game to a respected superstar like Larry Bird.

Again, Linsanity was awesome and I hope he earned it in a positive manner during the pickup games, which he infers happened at ISU.

Many people playing sports at an organized and unorganized levels are given nicknames, which some fit positively and others negatively. Are you saying this is not true and his experience with Linsanity is not common?

The deal at Publix? Stupid and awful. I can't reiterate that enough. I'd like to see Hulka put a beating on those hucksters.

The reference to being called Jeremy Lin? Perhaps I'm reading this wrong but is Josh complaining about that? C'mon Josh. C'mon. That's a stretch. I got called Telly by all my buddies and some non-buddies...in reference to Telly Savalas- due to my failing hair particles. Hair shaming!! But nobody was calling me George Jefferson! They called me Telly because we're both white. My black RA in Manchester, a good hooper...he called me Danny Ainge, not a term of endearment, for constantly letting it fly in full court 5 in 5 games at the old McCormick Gym. He didn't call me Andrew Toney! He called me Danny because I shot 30 footers and we're both white. Racist remark!! (umm no it wasn't remotely racist I'm being sarcastic) Let me hear your on field/court nicknames that could be deemed offensive or "shaming" today!! Hell in my circles we sit around the campfire with a Heineken and laugh about those nicknames.

I'm rooting for Josh and I hope he continues up the ladder. Yes indeed. Complaining about Lin-reference? Josh...establish your name in the reporting biz otherwise.

It's so freaking en vogue to be a victim today. Now I'm not referencing situations where the dilemma is obvious and there are true victims.

But the list of faux victims grows exponentially. Blast away at me for "victim-shaming."

You've just earned the 'Hamdonger' label here. Jeremy Lin is of Chinese descent. Josh is of Filipino descent. It matters.

You've just shown your ignorance of the problem by not considering that not all those of Asian descent are of one cultural background. You've just shown your ignorance of the problem by equating baldness to skin color and cultural heritage. Regardless of your baldness, I'm gonna guess you're still white. I still can't believe you're--even remotely--equating hair shaming with racism.

You've just shown your ignorance of the problem by not understanding that by using 'Jeremy Lin' they were again placing Josh in a box that signifies he is "other", that he is not a member of the 'preferred' race. That he is not white.

Josh is of Filipino descent. That shouldn't count against him. Josh is fully American. That should count for something. Josh is fully human. That should count for everything.

No, I'm saying he was called that only because the color of his skin. That's it.
? ? ? I thought it was more because JL is Chinese and JT is Filipino. I just had to go and look at some pictures for a double-take; I am not seeing what you are seeing with what you stated.

Kobe Bryant gave himself the nickname Black Mamba.
You should really take a look at some of these professional nicknames:
bleacherreport.com/articles/571757-the-100-best-nicknames-in-sports-history
Andrei (AK-47) Kirilenko
Jared (The Hefty Lefty) Lorenzen
Harold (Pee Wee) Reese
Tom (Flash) Gordon (black man)
Shaun (The Flying Tomato) White
Carlton (Pudge) Fisk And Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez
Glen (Big Baby) Davis
Robert (Chief) Parish
Bryant (Big Country) Reeves
(The Croatian Sensation) Toni Kukoc
James (The Great White Hope) Jeffries
Larry (Grandma-Ma) Johnson
Lester (The Molester) Hayes
William (The Fridge) Perry
Charles (The Round Mound of Rebound) Barkley

Should probably just delete this thread.

From some of the comments:

" Jeremy Lin is offensive? Try being Arab bro. On a good day you get the Iron Sheikh or Ali Hajji Sheikh, but more often its "Ayatollah" or "Osama.""

"I've played a lot of basketball - a little bit in Europe and many days on some tough city courts. If you're unknown to a particular group they tend to size you up and sometimes that comes with labels - complimentary or otherwise. In the early days I've heard my opponent say "I got 'Opie' here, or I'll check Huck Finn". And then after the game when his team is on the sidelines the next opponent up says I'll guard 'Walton' (yes I'm a redhead). So don't hold your breath waiting for cultural appropriateness at a playground court - but you can get respect as a player and that means you're welcome back to play again and help them see the person you really are - that's the best antidote to stereotypes. "

Seriously, if you believe that you receive some of that banter and only you received it and very few like you have, then you are mistaken. This is as old as humans have been competing and will continue to do so in some form forever. Besides, I do not believe that the ones who are doing these things, are reading these things in the NYTimes, PSA's, or other types of media or caring about your feelings. Take it up with them and handle your business.

So racial slurs are OK because they make you tougher? Got it.
I am not sure you do. It is pretty well established that at the "courts" where these things happen and happen to many people of many different races, ethnicities, ect. (Did you even read other people's experiences on your own print or are you a headline person?) are not isolated incidents, but pretty common.

The people who are doing this are more than likely not:
-Reading the NY Times articles
-Listening to your podcasts
-Reading your tweets
-Reading this board
-Paying attention to you
-Caring about your feelings
-Having respect for you only because you are there participating

Perhaps if one believes strongly about reaching out to those to try to make a change, then take it up with the people who are doing at the place they are doing it at. May get better results for your efforts. You are more than likely not going to reach them here or in any other "media". CNN, ESPN, ect run a lot of shows on these topics, perhaps this thread should be deleted on this type of forum since it is covered elsewhere.

I am not sure this is really "ISU General Talk" either. I am not really expecting to see this kind of topic on this board.

This is my last post on this thread.

Side comment: I LOVE the new ignore feature. I can see responses, but not the post that triggered the reply. And usually the reply tells me all I need to know about the original post.

BS, I mean BF...

You do realize during Lin's run of 'Linsanity' that he was MASSIVELY celebrated by American culture for being Asian and successful on the basketball court?? It was one of the most fun things for me to watch over the last 10 yrs because a guy who was sterotyped into a specific type of player overcame all that and frankly -
American sports CELEBRATED. WE CELEBRATED JEREMY LIN the player AND the person.

Also. You wouldn't know that my youngest daughter's boyfriend for 2 yrs is black and I love the kid. Maybe you'll see him play in Redbird sometime in the next 4 yrs. You wouldn't know that my youngest son's classmate/best friend since the 2nd grade is black and he spends a couple of weekends a month overnight at their place. You wouldn't know that my 4 kids all went pre-K through 12 at a multi-cultural private school, and we sent them there (PAID MONEY) in part so they wouldn't be around kids who looked the same as them. You wouldn't know that I had a black man and a gay man in my wedding. You wouldn't know that half of my workforce on a marketing contract, every one that I personally hired, is black.

The Publix deal for Josh is disgusting. Racism is disgusting...although most of us of ALL colors, even if we say have no racist qualities, carry with us racist subliminals from our culture and all of life's experiences...that we may not even be aware of. (I realize this ties into your response to me) BLINK by Gladwell is an excellent book that exposes some of this IN ALL OF US.

Now, the Lin comparison? Not disgusting. JMO. Have yourself a nice day Mad Red Face.

Sincerely,
~Hamdonger

P.S.
There are 2 things we should focus on in today's culture.
1. Let's be GOOD to each other, plain and simple. Our legacies will be how we treated each other. That's all that really matters.
2. Stay the hell off social media. All the best, Redbirds.

Hamdonger, they may have celebrated Jeremy Lin, but that doesn't make it right to call people of Asian decent "Jeremy Lin." And they were not calling Josh "Jeremy Lin" to make him feel welcome, as a term of endearment, or to celebrate his heritage. It was used as a term of demeaning. And to conclude your entire rant about Jeremy Lin contradicts your first point in your P.S.
