While checking in on preseason news of my Packers...........yes, I am an owner...........I read an article about a guy who left Georgia Tech one credit hour short of his degree to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL. His chance for a roster spot in Green Bay is as a long snapper. The article said that he had snapped on field goals and extra points at Georgia Tech, but someone else snapped on punts and so that was an area of his game that he needed to further develop. He went to Birmingham, AL. and worked out at a program called One on One Kicking operated by Mike MacCabe. Youngsters on this board might not be familiar with that name, but many of us geezers are. When I explored further to confirm that it was OUR Mike McCabe, I found an article saying that he was from Ohio and when he didn't get any D1 offers from programs in Ohio, he ended up at Illinois State at the same time that a young coach named Urban Meyer was working with special teams. Kind of ironic that he couldn't get an offer from an Ohio school, but ended up working under Urban Meyer.

BTW, I was just relaying what was written in the article. I could be wrong..........it happens about once every other year..........but my recollection was that young Urban Meyer was not an Assistant Coach for Special Teams but was instead a Grad Assistant working with wide receivers.

Wikipedia says he was "outside linebackers coach" in 1988 and QB and WR coach in 1989, after having spent the two previous years at OSU as a grad assistant. Will dig in my program archives at some point and see if I have any from that era.

I didn't know that the late season redshirt pull from Jeff Weese was a catalyst for that 4 game redshirt rule. I vaguely remember discussions of it, on an earlier version of Redbirdfan.net?

"Berry plans to take time to enjoy some well-earned relaxation and cross items off his bucket list once he formally steps away 18 months from now, but he did not rule out a return to coaching at a lower level down the road. "

Interesting. A couple of years ago I asked someone that knows Todd Berry very well if he would ever return to coaching and the answer was an emphatic "No." Never say never with football coaches.

Jacksonville plays in the Hall of Fame game tomorrow night on NBC. JRob is listed as first on the depth chart, so he must be recovered from his achilles tear? Hope he gets it going again.

Congrats to Davontae Harris ... go Bears !!!

Davontae and James Osh overlapped during 2013 and 2014 seasons at ISU.

Looking at the Bears depth chart they have Davontae listed as the 3rd or 4th safety behind Jacquan Brisker. Bears have a lot of injuries in the secondary so Davontae could get some playing time in the 2nd half. None the less good to see Davontae listed as a safety, always thought he would be a pretty good safety.

I watched the replay of Saturday's game yesterday and he got a fair amount of PT. Appeared to be "first team" gunner on punts, and was playing in the 2nd quarter at corner, it seemed to me, altho it could've been S. Didn't seem to do much of anything good or bad, really. I should say, guys he was covering weren't targeted, so wasn't in on many plays at CB.

Davontae Harris led Bears in tackles with 6 on preseason game 3 ... making some noise !!!!

James Osh had a catch.

But Bears owned the Browns in biggest preseason game of year .. Just Fields was 14-16, 156 yards, 3 TDs, 0 Picks and they were up 21-0 when it mattered before Browns got 2 FGs late in 1st half. Bears now 3-0 ... hmmm ?

Now that the controlled scrimmages, practices, and evaluation of players (my terms for all of pre-season football) who will not be there on opening day is over ... we will see what the 2022 Bears look like against opponents when it counts. I hope the ISU representatives make the team and have an impact. The Bears? I expect them to be bad to pitiful once the real games begin. I hope I am wrong...but I doubt it.
