wow .. good for Bello. Recall he didn't play much at U o I .. comes to ISU for 5th year, gets a shot and a nice role. and now he makes an NFL practice squad. I believe U of I had no one drafted and am guessing they had no one make an NFL roster or practice squad ... but not sure ... anyone know ? How ironic we took a "cast off" and now he is in NFL.

Again, good for BJ Bello !! Here is is Bio .. doesn't read like NFL player by any stretch of imagination. What an amazing turn around for him by coming to ISU. Also note he is home stater from Lincolnway West.

2016: MVFC All-Newcomer Team selection ... played in all 12 games this season, with 11 starts after transferring from Illinois … led all ISU defenders with 9.5 tackles-for-loss and six sacks, with two forced fumbles … tied at No. 9 in the MVFC in sacks (6.0) … named MVFC Newcomer of the Week after the win over Missouri State (Nov. 12), after tallying eight tackles, with a half TFL and two pass breakups … had a season-high 11 tackles and added a sack at Indiana State (Sept. 24) … had a season-best 2.5 TFLs and nine tackles the previous week against Eastern Illinois (Sept. 17).

2015 at Illinois: Saw action in eight, primarily on special teams ... recorded a total of six tackles and one pass breakup on the season ... tallied two tackles and broke up a pass against Kent State ... added two tackles against Western Illinois.

2014 at Illinois: Recorded three tackles in nine games played.

2013 at Illinois: Played in four games and totaled four tackles ... had two tackles against Cincinnati ... made collegiate debut and his posted first career tackle against Southern Illinois.

Lincoln-Way West HS: Three-year starter for coach Mark Vanderkooi ... rated a two-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com ... named All-Area by the Joliet Herald-News ... had 81 tackles, three tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one interception in 2011, while leading Lincoln-Way West to a second-straight IHSA Class 5A playoff appearance ... was also an all-state track performer.

Personal: Born Oct. 31, 1994, in New Lenox, Illinois ... son of Adebukola and Lawrence Bello ... one of three siblings ... cousin of former Illiniois defensive back Supo Sanni.

Illinois had Smoot drafted in the second round, I believe. They have been good at developing DLs for the NFL. Nickerson jr made a roster, but he is the opposite of Bello. Then I think they had a practice squad player or two (Carroll Phillips?).

We are certainly having a lot of success for a FCS school though. Definitely helps with recruiting.

A few notes on practice squad eligibility:

"teams could have two of the 10 practice squad spots filled by players who had two or more years of experience on an NFL roster. This year, that number has been increased to four players."

"A player can spend no more than three seasons on any practice squad."

Now for the $$$ piece. Hopefully some of these guys will last all season and even get called up.

How are practice squad players compensated?
•Practice squad players must be paid at least $7,200 per week for the 2017 season. If a player is on a team’s practice squad for the entire regular season, that amounts to $122,400 for the year.
•Teams can pay practice squad players as much as they’d like. They’re not limited to that minimum, and practice squad salaries do count toward the cap. The Rams, in fact, paid tackle Isaiah Battle a whopping $25,888 per week. Most teams tend to pay salaries closer to the minimum, though.
•If a practice squad player is signed to another team’s active roster, they will receive a minimum of three game checks, no matter how long they remain on that active roster. They can be cut after a week, but they’re still getting three game checks.

thanks .. I think I'm remembering from couple years ago maybe about U of I getting shut out of NFL, while we had a several getting serious shots and sticking.

Shelby got the start and looked to play most 1st and 2nd downs. Don't know what Rex Ryan was smoking acting like Shelby was a bum from the bench seeing his first action of the night? He blocked the 2nd kick attempt after the Denver timeout wiped out the first make for the Chargers.

Can someone say Appalachian State flashback!! Way to go Shelby!
