One more week to the opening of Fall camp?

My guess is that camp opens next Monday, July 30. Can anyone confirm? In any case, we need to get back to talking football.

Big questions for the Fall for me at least:

Who will win the QB job? When we last brought in a transfer QB to challenge a returning starter, the transfer Tre Roberson won the job in the Fall and we all know what happened. But Roberson had won games as a starter at IU and had even been conference player of the week. Brady Davis didn't have that success at Memphis. And Jake Kolbe has way more experience than did Blake Winkler. It is not the same situation. Or is it possible that one of the other QBs on the roster will emerge? That's more doubtful or they likely wouldn't have accepted Davis. But there are enough questions to wait and see.

Who will step up among the receivers? There are opportunities to grab a spot in the two deep for the receivers. Schnell is number one, and transfer Haley looked good in the Spring. Will Fuchs finally join the Birds, and will he be a WR or a TE? Will he be good, as its been a while since he played. There are a couple of upperclassmen who might make larger contributions and some newcomers and underclassmen who might emerge. There are opportunities here for surprises.

The Oline looks solid, but we also thought that a couple of years ago and they didn't seem to click as well as expected. They need to be strong as a group if we're going to win.

Will we see any players change positions and make a surprising impact? We've seen players find new spots where they thrived. We've had offensive players turn into impact defensive players over and over (Keoshian, Keene, Barry, Holm, Graham) and a particularly notable QB turn into an NFL WR. With our depth at QB and RB, and needs elsewhere, will someone switch?

We're going to see new names on the interior of the DLine, and especially in the second string. Again, there is the normal turnover of players and some new guys will step up here and in the second string for the LBers.

I think the DBs are a fairly experienced group as a whole.

Which of the new players will make the biggest impact beyond Megginson?

Finally, the long snapper returns, but we'll have a new primary punter and placekicker. Will they be the same player or two guys? It'll be a solid season on special teams if we aren't talking about the kicker or the punter. I'd love to see a guy emerge as a real weapon in either or both of these spots. IF our success is going to depend upon controlling the ball and running the ball and controlling the clock and field position like many of us expect, the kickers may have a very big impact on our record by the end of the season.

Well, I can answer the QB Question for you with relative certainty. Kolbe is your QB1 this year. No way the staff takes a 2 year starter and puts him on the bench. I don't care if young John Elway walks on in the next week, Kolbe is your stater.

Our kicking game has been... meh for as long as I can remember. Sure, an accurate kicker or boom punter are luxuries that most teams have a hard time finding, especially at the at the FCS level, but I'd like to think we have a kicker that can at least consistently hit from 35 yards or so. With our OLine and running game, I expect we should be able to turn a 44 yard game winning kick into a 25 yard game winning kick in 2 plays without ever putting the ball in the air.

Good overview isubu.

Couple related observations about fall camp:

- QB competition is mainly for 2nd string and 2019 audition. OC Beathard and QB Kolbe know each other well from 2014 and 2015 ... Kolbe was 2nd string in 2015 and true FR 3rd string in 2014. Granted he played behind Roberson with different play packages built for read option. But they know each other and are a very good fit for each other.

- WR group .. need help, so I won't be surprised if we give a few true FR a long look on our 2 deep. After Schell's 51 catches, we only return 13 other receptions at WR position. Everything else was TE/RB or graduated. Note, Schnell is the only returning WR from the MVFC all conference list .. so everyone else lost their best players.

- TE .. I like Petkovich a lot, especially under OC Beathard and with Kolbe's short pass game. Only question is the 2nd and 3rd string. I suspect we might have more 2 TE sets with our run game.

- RB .. yawn .... going to take a nap, so wake me when season starts ... assuming we stay healthy, it is going to be fun. I really believe our run game will rival NDSU's this year. Robinson, Smith, Birch ... get used to hearing their names ... a lot.

- OL .. you mentioned high expectations with our returning OL group going into 2016 season, and yes ... we had very up and down year offensively. That was partly on Kolbe who struggled to learn the pocket in 2016, even while having good pass stats. But given same up and down results in 2017 .. Kolbe got much better in pocket, but had way worse pass stats ... I'm putting most of blame on our co-OCs and particularly OC Dicken .. just not the right guy for the job. So I feel much better about our OL group, especially with a real OC in charge.

Defense ... question marks everywhere having lost 9 full time starters. But we clearly have the bodies and depth everywhere .. just hard to ignore that they are mostly unproven, so not sure where, if, and when playmakers will emerge. Wide open depth chart should make for very competitive camp. Assuming the offense can carry us to 3-1 record in first 4 games, the defense justs need to be ready to carry their own weight by game 5 (week 6) in MVFC home opener against WIU .. and then the rest of the MVFC gauntlet.

Special Teams .. KIcker/Punter is question mark; but cover and return teams shou;d be good enough .. we clearly have the bodies. Not sure we have game breakers at KR or PR ... so we'll see.

In short ... let's go defense !!!!!

Count me with those who think Kolbe will have a solid senior season and hold onto the #1 spot. Will predict OC Beathard makes a big difference for Kolbe, puts him in better spots to succeed - but time will tell.

WR will be a big challenge, altho Schnell will be productive. Haley was mentioned, also I'm wondering about RS freshman from Chicago St. Pat's Edgar, trackman Patterson, as guys who "get it" this year. Looking for a boost from the new position coach.

Also hoping OC will come up with some schemes to use our TE's. In addition to Petkovich, Gillum showed some stuff last year.

Looking for a hard-hitting, swarming type defense this year, a lot of decent guys, kind of interchangeable parts size-wise at LB and DE, lots of guys see the field. We'll go with the hot hand so to speak, who's playing well on a given day and has the advantage, and we'll see lots of combinations. Hoping to see more from the likes of Barajas, Deforest, Demarco Washington, Tuvone Clark.

Circumstances will "allow" me to boycott the St. X game, so looking forward to seeing the Birds run rough over the Panthers in Game 2. Am optimistic about this season.
