Culture. What the hell does that really mean? Yes ultimately is winning. Taking care of business in the classroom and representing the program and university in the community. This program is not a complete rebuild. Yes it must become relevant again in the conference by winning. There is MVC caliber talent on this team. These guys want to win and be coached. Pedon has time to recruit some of these guys to stay and add a couple guys to make this team capable of challenging for a Valley championship next year. Drake is losing all their 24 yrs old and Loyola is gone. They can win next year!

Oh that’s official? Wow “must have missed that”. Just be good to be in the know on an elite kid major program!

Agreed. There will be a handful back but I don’t expect much else. It appears Howie is sticking around for tomorrow’s presser.

Also, Ohio State junior standout, EJ Liddell went through senior day activities today, meaning he’s not returning to Ohio State. Obviously, his move is likely to the NBA but…. ISU recruited EJ in high school, Pedon was lead recruiter at OSU, EJs parents are Redbirds….Definitely not happening but…Maybe???
The only way he plays in Illinois is with the Bulls!

So, one mentions the 80s successful basketball teams and someone else goes to riots????? Maybe a demonstration or two but a riot????? Where were the burnt buildings where was all the damage??? Maybe an over energetic demonstration but a riot?

Hopefully this new guy can get ISU somewhere back to where ISU basketball was in the 1980s. That level of success would be appreciated. I have watched ISU win two Missouri Valley championships one in Horton, one in Redbird Arena, I would like to see one in STL.
Hey. We made national news and THEY called them riots. Today we’d call ‘em demonstrations or marches, sure. But there weren’t that many ‘demonstrations’ in the early- to mid-80’s. ”Riots” sell more headlines. FWIW I was present and marching in the first, but was working the night of the 2nd.

Besides . . . I was being humorous. I’m sorry if you didn’t get that.

Culture is a lot of things. We currently have a losing culture. Some high character and successful guys that don’t know how to win. Adding transfers from losing programs in SJSU didn’t help. Adding character issues (Lofton, Yarbrough, etc) didn’t help. Constantly having guys leave further eroded any culture Dan was trying to build. He chased off Johnny Hill, but then let Yarbrough get away with anything he wanted. We largely had no culture. Instilling anything will be a win.

The + 2 theory. I'm watching Michigan State. Malik Hall. Part-time stater. 10 points 5 rebounds. He's a 20/10 guy were he with us. If you get a couple of guys like that to stay in Illinois you've got all the culture you need. This coach can recruit? We'll see.

Yeah, what's the difference? Brennan's list, the search firm's list, the Pantagraph list, Redbirdfan.net list, they all had some of the same names, a few unique to each, but it sounds like there was a good range of people "vetted" in one way or the other. If in fact a DII coach was included in the search, as well as a "long time" assistant at a Big 10 school, sounds like they covered it pretty well. For God's sake people, get over it, enjoy it, give it a chance, embrace it. Mr. Pedon, come on down, your table is ready!!!

Just asking and not making any assumptions about our new HC, but did anyone have him on their list? I'm pretty excited about him.

I am not sure if this had been posted somewhere or not. His base salary at OSU appears to have been 500k and it mentions some other incentives.

"If any of the assistant coaches choose to leave Ohio State to become a coach at the Division-I level or in the NBA before their contracts end, they would have to pay $50,000 and return "bonuses and supplemental compensation" to the university. They also won't be allowed to contact or recruit anybody that Ohio State had been recruiting unless their new team had also been recruiting the player."

I assume the player could contact us though

Isn’t his contract up after the season anyways? The article suggests a two year contract of 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons of $500k.

I now see that it says the contract is set to expire June 30, 2021. Does that still count as leaving early to be a head coach?

I remember reading his name on some b-ball analyst's list. I know I read his name somewhere in connection to us.

I think on paper it is a good hire, he checks a lot of boxes. I'm curious to see if he is going to come in with a set style and theme or if he is going to be figuring it out. I want to see who he brings in for assistants. I'd like to see him keep Johnson, and then pick up an experienced vet (not named Brian Jones), and another guy with good recruiting connections. Love to see him keep Tony too. After that, I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of team we have on day one and I'm excited for tip off next year.

He was mentioned early after Dan was let go. Most, including myself, probably didn’t give it a second thought. It was generally known he was picky about his first job and was a finalist at Cinci last year.

I didn't catch that. He must be on an another contract if it expired June 30, 2021.

Out of curiosity, I took a look at the history of head to head matchups of ISU vs Toledo and ISU vs Miami (OH) to see if pedon had ever been to RBA. Looks like Miami (OH) lost here 64-40 on 12-05-2006 with him on staff as an assistant early in his career.

Doesn’t look like we’ve ever played Toledo? Doesn’t seem right but can’t find any historic matchups.

Anyone going to the meet and greet with Pedon today? I am really hoping they stream it or actually have it on on demand or YouTube. I hope to hear him lay out his vision. With baseball determined to ruin this season the news coming out about coach and players will get me through the next could months.

Do they normally archive things like this. Have a dr appt at 11 but would like to see what Ryan has to say. I assume it will be just like anything else on espn+ and will be accessible once it’s complete.
I believe they do. I know you can watch past games

His parents also quoted in the goredbirds article about the hire. I'm not sayin', just sayin'
