Agree with this 100%
I had been hearing that the final spot would likely be between Judson and Ekey. Ultimately, as y’all have pointed out, it’d be a risk to have two very young guys as first time assistants. Plus, Judson checks the “Midwest recruiting ties” much more than Ekey.

Would not be surprised at all to see Jon brought in as DoBo or Video (the role he was in at SMU).

Pedon just followed Zach Cleveland (‘22 Liberty commit), Noah Cleveland (NCHS ‘24) Cole Certa (CCHS ‘24), and Jaheem Webber (NCHS ‘24).

The way Pedon is approaching recruiting has been phenomenal. He has been all over the in-state ‘23 and ‘24 recruits.
No offense to any coach previously, but I don't remember any of them making a strong presence felt within 3 miles of ISU.

Didn’t Muller get a commitment from Chris Payton? Granted it didn’t end well and I doubt it would have even had he actually come to ISU . . . There really have not been that many skilled players coming out of Blo-No, but I think had there been more players of higher caliber the recruitment might have been a little more insistent.

He also had Chastain, Bruninga and Tinsley from the area as well on the same team. Granted those careers didn't go as we all thought or hoped they would. I wonder if these situations made him not want to recruit local or Blo-No kids.

That’s not the point I don’t think. It’s that Muller never built relationships. Building relationships might get us the next Alec Peters rather than jumping in late. Or it might get us Chastain before Loyola rather than after.

Yeah, Payton was committed and you're right. It would've ended poorly. Though there hasn't been a ton here's a list of some D1 kids who were local that chose to go elsewhere under the previous regime. Were the Birds in the mix for any of them? Who knows.
Keita Bates-Diop- U-High - Ohio State
Trey Harris - BHS -Indian Hills/WO K-State
Chris Payton BHS- Indian Hills/Pitt/TBD
Alex Peacock- NCHS- Iowa Western/Texas State
Colton Sandage- UT Arlington/Vincennes/Western/ILST
Ryan Schmidt- CCHS- WO at Illannoy
Anthony Beane Jr. NCHS- SIU (was committed to ISU at one point)
Tyler Seibring- NCHS-Elon
Austin Stewart- NWHS- Central Michigan
Gavin Block- Lincoln- Ohio
Matt Chastain -Leroy- Loyola/ILST
Francis Okoro- NWHS - Oregon/SLU
Zach Cleveland- NCHS- Liberty

I'm sure there are others but this is a pretty solid list of "locals."

DaveBird mentioned Chas, Taylor and Boogie. Only one of which came straight from HS. I'm not saying Muller didn't go to local gyms, I'm just saying I never really heard much about it.

Pedon isn't going to an open gym in April 2022 to get a 22 or 23 recruit. He's establishing a relationship with Witzig that could bear fruit in years beyond.

Also, Zach Cleveland's brother is good.

Beane followed his dad as he left ISU for SIU from my memory. I think its all a little of both, I've heard stories recently that I question Muller's relationships with the area and city coaches. I do know that everything is probably true on both parts. Pedon is building good relationships which is a good step and hopefully we get a kid or 2 but we won't get every kid from the area to go to ISU. Since I can remember and followed ISU hoops since 1990 I can't really think of a local kid that was really good at ISU. Some kids just want to go away and not deal with the pressure going to school so close to home.

Dodie Dunson- Iowa State/Bradley
Brandon Dunson- SIUE/Arizona State

Those were when Jank was here but ISU has been missing out on local kids for a while for one reason or not.

Didn’t Dodie Dunson first commit to ISU and then back out after the first week of summer practice?

Brandon Holtz was a Bird who I believe played with Dodie at BHS. I thought Dodie was committed to ISU at some point but grades were an issue? I could be misremembering or just making up a story that a kid turned down his hometown team to go play for their rival.

Jank did a decent job of recruiting the state and looking at his rosters, the region. Many of these names didn't pan out, but he was in the region Jordan ThrelofF (IL), Blake Mishler (IL), kept Osiris (IL) in town, Kenyon Smith(IL), Kellen Thornton(IL), Landon Shipley (STL), Alex Rubin (Minn), Jeremey Robinson (IL), Zeke Upshaw (IL), Trey Blue (IL), Jon Ekey (MO), Justin Clark (MO), Nic Moore (IN), Nick Ziesloft (IL), Johnny Hill (IL).

Going through those rosters, on average, about half of them were regional guys. Sure there are other reasons in the mid-2000s coaches focuses a little more regionally-less technology/player exposure, but Muller never seemed to value the state outside of Plee, Tone, Taylor, Roland Griffin. Those are off the top of my head...did he really only get 4 scholarship players as freshman from Illinois in 10 years? Tone was the last time a scholarship freshman from Illinois committed to ISU. 2019.

Looking at the rosters the players we've had from the state the past decade are Chastain, Tinsley, Mark Hall, Gassman was a WO but earned a scholarship later, he recruited Christian Romine-basically a WO, Jaycee Hillsman (1-year senior), and Milik. 11 players from Illinois in 10 years. Jank had 10 in in less than half the amount of time. I didn't notice it at the time but tMuller REALLY lived in SEC country.

Anyway, I'm excited about the new staff's commitment to regional recruiting.

And you know as well as I do that most of these kids would’ve been grilled by this fan board as not worthy of scholarships.

“My interest in this job was high all along, I think it is a great job,” Pedon said. “Now that I am here I feel even stronger about that. I think we have everything here that you need to be highly successful. Once we get our team connected with the community how we want to, I think [it] will be a very powerful thing."

Ding ding da ding ding...DingDing.

And...Muller invited local coaches, and occasionally, their teams, into practice.

But a coach goes with his territory...12 years as an assistant in SEC...so yeah, Adunk makes a good point.

I'm excited for the future and Coach Pedon, but 2 yrs from now we could be biotching about the fact that we don't recruit nationally or internationally, enough.

What does this have to do with anything? This fan base is tame as hell compared to down 74 and other basketball first schools.
