Parents don’t serve as the best barometer for gauging their kids’ intentions. likearoc loved coming on here, and DJ’s parents really seemed to love Redbird Basketball - but their kids still moved on.

Now if one of our guys had a dad like Noah Carter’s, said parent could totally give a strong indication that his son wouldn’t be sticking around…

I looked Nic up and he signed with a Polish team last July. It would be cool if it's in Warsaw.

It is an interesting article, for sure. A fair amount of "coach speak", but what I sense he's trying to express is that whole concept of building a program, everyone tugging on the same end of the rope, etc. "Relationships" is about having each others backs, team first, etc. His discussion about not "recruiting" his own guys I think is kind of a "not blowing smoke up your arse" kind of attitude, that's how I'm reading it. What are your goals? Here's how I can help, here's what I think you need, etc. No BS. We'll see how it works. I think lots of these kids wanna be stroked, and maybe he's got a subtle way to do that, maybe he'll find he won't get enough players to buy in. My sense is neither Butler or OSU have many "prima donnas" and if that's the type of program he's going for, well, good for him and let's see it.

Not much that we didn't already know but here are the highlights.

-Reiterates that he wants guys that want to be here. He doesn't want try to sell a kid.

- "You get what you earn. It takes entitlement out of the picture. There are guys here that were captains last year. I love those guys, I've gotten to know them and they've been very impressive to me but I've told them in front of the team that you have to earn that in this program."

On the roster, "It's going to be a fluid situation. I think when you take over a job at any level, regardless if you're coming off a coaching change for a good reason or not good reason, when someone from the outside comes in, in this day and age, you have to anticipate that there is going to be some movement. (In this situation for any new coach) There's probably going to be 3-4 guys that definitely want to stay, 3-4 guys that definitely want to go, and 4, 6, 8 guys in the middle that are trying to get a vibe here, and trying to get a feel for how you're going to be as a coach, and if they'll get along with you and what kinds of things are you saying." Goes on to say he's not walking in the door trying to convince guys to stay but rather get to know them and see where they're at before making decisions.

He was asked about EJ Liddell and jokingly said, "I've already told him and his parents that his dream of playing the point guard is here, and it's waiting on him. He just needs to say the word. It'd be a great story, both of his parents went to Illinois State, he could follow in their footsteps and ride off into the sunset."

Really enjoyed listening to that interview. Pretty excited to see what the roster looks like after the next couple months.

"I want guys that want to be." ...and said with a hoarse enthusiastic voice. I wanna play for Coach. He seems very Porter-ish but with a more distinct pedigree. I've warmed up. There.

Thank you Adunk for the posting of Pedon's recent interview - very enjoyable listen.

Here's my question - Pedon is a great interview and says all the right stuff. You can see how he sold himself
to Brennan. Ooooops, shouldn't use the term SELL with Pedon; anyway as he and his staff filter through all these
names of Portal guys, guys who obviously ain't playin for the name on the front of the jersey..........how does Pedon
and his staff believe any of them about their commitment moving forward??
RELATIONSHIPS - how long or how much time does a staff have to build a relationship with a Portal guy before poof......
he's gone to the next school. Realizing there isn't an exact science to any type of recruiting but what RP is stating, over and
over about trust and relationships sure makes me hope/pray he ain't too naive about the kids who show interest in playing ball
in Normal, Il.

Frankly, a lot of it probably comes down to kids who were raised right, believe in family values and commitment to staying home
on the farm, mom's pot roast and homemade apple pie for Sunday lunch after worship.

With how many guys are in the portal isn’t more about them buying in while here? Not all kids will be loyal. Maybe they love the coach and team but find ISU isn’t the right fit. Or maybe something else pulls them. The key is getting guys that buy in while here. If they want to leave after a year that’s the nature of the beast, but they better buy in the second they enter campus until they leave.

There is no loyalty in NCAA sports anymore. It is all about ME, NIL, and Dad/AAU in a kid’s ear telling them what to do.

Yeah so my response was to someone questioning Pedon. He’s said all the right things. He has recruited at a high level. Why are we questioning anything. These answers will come, but to question him 2 weeks into the job is pretty dumb.

I thought I’d read every player gets one play-immediately transfer. Do they sit a year if they transfer again? If so, I’d think we’d be more likely to hang onto anyone who transfers in.

This is my understanding - one "free" and then sit a year for another - except I don't know if grad transfers have to sit if they take a "second" transfer. Or how the Covid year factors in, if at all.

Those are some big smiles from the players and coach. Of course, first meeting- handshakes and cameras all around, you have to be energized. Here are the current folks in the program that have engaged with announcements on social media, which could suggest at the very least, there is some level of interest in sticking around.
Current players: Reeves, Liam, Josiah, Stadleman, Samuels, Williams, Fleming, and Lewis.
"Future" Players: Tajuan & Takai Simpkins
Current Staff: Rob Johnson.

Also sleeper name for a potential staff member... Jon Ekey. Currently Video Director under Jank at SMU but played at Illannoy while Pedon was there.
Just bumping this for a potential announcement...... May be right, may be wrong, but it was in the ether several weeks ago.

If it does end up being Ekey, I feel like he is taking a huge gamble as a new head coach to hire two guys who have never been assistants before to his staff.
