Final thoughts on N. Iowa

I don't think any of our future opponents are going to want to emulate the N. Iowa defensive game plan. The Panthers conceded the underneath passes believing that Illinois State was not capable of short passing their way down the field. They must have thought that they were facing last year's team. Not only did Annexstad complete 70% of his passes, but the quick passing game did not allow the Panther D time to rush the QB. Annexstad dropped back to pass 41 times and wasn't sacked once. Credit the pass protection, but also junk the Panther game plan. Look for teams to imitate SIU's in your jersey and handsy style of tight coverage. When refs don't throw flags, it works great.

Also, it was strange that the Redbirds got 4 sacks but were credited with zero QB hurries. In fact, the stats don't show either team with a QB hurry. I don't know if it was a hurry, but I thought Lewan forced QB Day out of his stance a couple of times.

Well, a technical item - you have to be under center in order to spike the ball to stop the clock. If you are in shotgun and spike it - intentional grounding - I have seen it called more than once. At least with refs who know the rules.

As far as QB hurries - like several other type of stats - subjective interpretation by the person taking stats.

I know we've all kind of moved on from the end of the UNI game, but from the Game Notes for the USD game, a little factoid helps explain Spack's thinking, not that we all don't know what he thinks:

The Illinois State defense currently ranks No. 17 in the country in total defense (and third in the MVFC) and much of that is do to the amount of success the Redbirds have had getting to the quarterback. ISU ranks No. 6 in the country in team sacks per game with nearly four per contest, and have a total of 19 on the year. A total of seven of those have come from linebacker Zeke Vandenburgh, but the pressure has come from everywhere with 10 players on the defense with at least a half sack on the year.

As much as most of us would have liked to see the O put some pressure on UNI at the end, close it out, you gotta say, chances are pretty good when its in the D's hands.
