If you look at the HS recruiting web sites Illinois doesn't get the respect that it used to. There aren't a lot four and five star recruits from the Land of Lincoln. The recruiting services focus on Florida, Texas and California. The large warm weather states dominate the player rankings.
We've responded by recruiting Texas (primarily DFW area) with minor involvement in California and Florida. Even so we have more players from Illinois than anywhere else but it's definitely not hurting us. Last year our best player was RB James Robinson from Rockford, IL. This season we have preseason All-Americans in Drew Himmelman (Geneseo, IL) and Romeo McKnight (Crystal Lake, IL). A 3rd preseason AA Devin Taylor is from Lansing , MI. Last I checked Lansing is not located in the Sunbelt. You can diss the talent in the upper Midwest until the play begins, then you have to deal with it.

Those states and others have spring football. Illinois and Wisconsin don't. The more you play the better you get. But there are a lot of good football players in both states.

This is pretty cool distinction for ISU ... surprised NDSU has just 2 on list, and no defenders. They have fair amount coming back and will be prohibitive favorites next year .. but they lost stud LB Jabril Cox to LSU.
