if you're interested this is a good story about a bad doctor:

Two years ago, my headaches were so bad I went to neurosurgeon in the suburbs and on my third visit he thought I might have Parkinson’s. Neither Dorene nor I liked him, but I had waited 4 months to get into see him. He put me on a very strong Parkinson’s medication and within 4 weeks I was having worse problems with my headaches and balance. He then put me on two more medications and things started snowballing from there.

1. started having problems with vertigo and couldn't drive

2. when I tried to stand my blood pressure dropped and I would get so dizzy I would have to sit down again.

3. Then he sent me to a cardiologist who diagnosed me with Orthostatic Hypotension which causes blood pressure to get too low when you stand up, so he put me on a medication that raises your blood pressure and after a few months on that medication my blood pressure got too high and out of control.

Then this nutty Neurologist sent me for more blood work and when the results came back, he said I should see an Oncologist because some things in the test showed I might have cancer. I then went and had my hip drilled into and bone marrow removed, and we waited a couple of nervous weeks for the results. I did not have cancer thank heavens.

4. Later I passed out on our front steps and fell backwards onto our cement sidewalk and suffered blood on the brain (subdural Hematoma) and was transferred to two hospitals and was in ICU for two days. It took me 5 weeks to recover and get over dizzy spells and had to use a walker for a couple of months.

While I was in the hospital, they recommended I see a "better" neurologist at Northwestern Medical. My first visit there, He told me he didn't like to talk bad about other doctors but had a suspicion I might have been misdiagnosed. With my permission he wanted to start treating me over from the beginning and start taking me off all the medication a little at a time. We thought that was a great idea as all I could do by now was sit in a chair and stumble around the house and suffer more falls.

Over the next few months he started weening me off the medications and about a month ago my balance was improving, no more vertigo and he changed me to a new blood pressure medication, and it is now back in the normal range. I started taking daily B12 shots that improve balance and will always have to take them.

Unfortunately, the medications created some long-term problems that can't be fixed. The Parkinson’s meds damaged my kidneys and i now have stage 2 kidney disease. That's the medication I must take now that costs us $260 a month.

I am now walking better, not using a cane and am returning to work.
Thanks for all the kind words

I hope you find a good malpractice lawyer and the first guy pays for your kidney meds for the rest of your life and his.

But, I'm so happy that your outlook is much better now. It's sad and scary that doctors like that get to keep treating patients who may never find out that he's a quack.

Glad you seem to be on the mend now, hope the quack didn't ruin your future. Can't do anything about the past now, except what Quinn said. As advanced as the medical world is, it's amazing how terrible it can still be. And in Neurology there is a shortage of physicians period, let alone good ones.

I had symptoms last summer very similar to your initial symptoms. I had a headache that lasted for weeks, dizzy getting up, blacked out a couple times, couldn't walk a straight line.... My GP ordered an MRI and they found some issues and I was referred to a Neurologist. At that point my headache had gone on for over a month. It was going to be another month and half to see a Neurologist in Bloomington, but they could get me in to see an Intern Neurologist in Peoria for an initial consult in only a month which would then lead to seeing an actual doctor once I became an established patient :snooty: . The scheduling lady told me if I couldn't wait that long to just go to the ER. Had a really bad night and did. I had already Googled my symptoms and one of the first things I came across happened to be what fixed me up. Of course it took a week in the hospital going through all kinds of tests and watching doctors shrug (I've seen that a lot in the past 7-8 years). Mine ended up being a CSF (Cerebral Spinal Fluid) leak. They took a few CCs of blood from my arm and injected it in my spine and the blood works to clot the leak. Felt better within an hour.

I have little faith in the health care world after personal and family issues. I hear people bitch about how in other countries you have to wait to see a doctor (even though they leave out the part about that being for elective procedures only), but I have seen first hand you have to here too to see a doctor dealing with some of the worst issues you could have.

Sorry, not trying to steal your thunder, just piling on, and maybe pointing you at another potential cause. Really glad you finally got in to the right doc. You're a great guy and I'm glad you have some hope now!

We're a (western medical)society that chases symptoms instead of identifying root problems. Acute care (heart attacks, etc) is excellent. Preventive, treating chronic illness, and the like - we're one the worst in the modern world. JMO, anywho...

Gary, I'm rooting for you man. This is a generous dude, peeps. I'm not much for suing but I almost think you'd be crazy not to build and win a case.

If you are really paying out of pocket for large co-pays/etc for your prescriptions....Have you asked the drug manufacturer with assistance? There is no reason that you should pay anything for a medication.

I have had my share of great docs and a few quacks. Currently...I have a exceptionally great team.

WOW, what a nightmarish story. Glad you dumped the quack. Unfortunately he will probably ruin the lives of others. Best of luck in your future.

I'm filing a lawsuit for damages due to Gary's misdiagnosed illness. Since Gary could not attend our annual Vegas meeting this year and without his valuable insight and analysis I more than likely ended up not winning $50K. This quack will pay. Gary kept telling me bu and the points, bu and the points and I said no way. Then he said ML all the favs on Sat and Sunday and yet I protested once more. Had he been there in person steering my wagering decisions as opposed to his lame text messages I would have listened. But nooooooooo…

Gary, what do you call the guy/girl who finishes dead last in his/her med school graduating class?

Answer: Doctor.
