There's gotta be kids who Pedon knows and recruited who will be looking for minutes next year. Maybe they're at Ohio State right now.

I do believe Pedon has a network and is likely aware of supposedly talented kids sitting at the end of benches whether it be P5 or ICC in East Peoria. We need more skill folks - not here to disrespect the young men who return next year. Matter of fact I welcome all to return but Pedon will not allow that to happen if he wants to improve on W's and our ranking in MVC.

Moving on - we talk so much about PG's and Bigs but what in the world........our D is not good. Yeah, I know a Big will make all the difference - rim and paint protector. I'm not buying it's just a Big cause whoever is on the perimeter

Sorry pops, but next yr I hope Mal is on the bench and getting reserve minutes
I don’t see any problem with this. Good programs replace talent with more talent every year and make kids earn minutes. This isn’t a personal insult. It is what is best for ISU basketball. I don’t hope this, but do hope Malachi is pushed by better teammates and earns time and helps us win. I enjoy watching him play.

I don’t see a problem with anyone voicing their opinion either because I do have mine. Have anyone noticed so many of Mal’s makes and misses come from creating a shot off the bounce? Have anyone noticed the other teams best shooters are running around like crazy from sets ran for them to be an option? Actually that helps in getting very good/wide open looks. I haven’t seen a 100% 3 pt shooter in my time of watching basketball and no 1-1 doesn’t count. This is in no way takin a shot a Pedon or the Staff at all. It’s more about me defending Mals game which is kind of pointless to do. Either way I get being frustrated as fans but I will never disrespect a coach or player that’s teaching or playing with my son. I wonder how difficul it would be for any of us to run up and down a basketball court for 30 minutes game in and game out? I will say this too. These kids are human beings, they get tired sometimes extremely tired of running up and die a court. I’m not the one to sate an excuse ever but it is what it is. If anyone have played pg before and is great at it it’s because they’ve been doing it years on years on years. I will say this again, Pedon is doing a good job with planning and coaching the talent that he have. One more thing. How many kids on this roster do you think would’ve earned playing time at UVA? IM NOT TAKING A SHOT AT ANY OF THESE KIDS, it’s not in me to do so. Take that as you may. Now back to frustration. Yes I get frustrated watching Mal play at times this season. Yes I get frustrated because Ik the coaching staff no where he can cause the most damage at. I also know there isn’t many options to play him at the 2 this season right now too. So for those who thought Mal would be better coming from UVA too bad you’re disappointed. I know where he’s gotten better at and know what he will work on this off-season. I just believe in being fair to all involved without bashing anyone, it’s called respect and trust me this message board is only lukewarm coming from UVA’s. So to this point his story is exactly this. Battled through a injury riddled high school career. Led his private school team to a 20 win season for the first time since Duke recruited a player from there. Was drawing mad D1 interest before sitting out a year of high school ball. Had other scholarships to go to. He chose to transfer from UVA for ISU because UVA proved to him he can play at a high level by gaining coach’s trust. Actually played major minutes in some big time games for them. So UVA Message board say How about Malachi Poindexter going from walk on to averaging 10 pg and a starter. So until the whole story is known it’s kind of wushu washy to me to post anything negative about such young people and their careers. So to many it’s a great story for Mal and to a few it’s a bummer. Last time I checked Many out number a Few❤️

I don’t see it happening because Pedon will have him in the right spot next year with more sets to run because of the talent he will bring in. This board just have too many jumping on and off. It doesn’t matter if the competition is just better or not. Kids just older and stronger or not. We don’t have true bugs or pg or not. All that matters is the L. More is said on this board after an L than after a W something is wrong with that. That’s just weird

I think I speak for most when I say that I want more talent to come in not to really replace anyone but push them to be their best. Another summer in the program can do wonders and if more talent comes in it can elevate everyone’s game and push them to be their best. Mal can win that someone new can win that. I will never ever root against a kid wearing this jersey.

I appreciate Malachi being at ISU and realize how tough it is especially for him to be pushed into playing a position he's never played before and really with only Burford being the only guards on the current team. I like the 2 freshman guards coming in next year and that will allow Malachi and Burford to play off the ball more where they are both more comfortable. With 3 freshman coming in next year that will be added depth and everyone that's here this year will be more and more comfortable together. A young staff will have an off-season to digest what we did good and bad and the players will have a true off-season to improve and work on there games. All this will do wonders. Thank you and I appreciate Malachi being a Redbird.

This is Mal’s first year playing major minutes at any position at this level. To top it off, he has no experience playing this position past 1 year of high school.

Sometimes getting better and improving is so subtle especially in a team sport such as basketball. Sometimes it’s on the players Basketball IQ to remember the sets. Sometimes losses are on the players. Sometimes the players need to be more accountable because they’re actually on the floor. Yes practices have gotten them better. Are we the most talented team nope not even close as a unit but you can’t measure their hearts. They’re gassed. DB for an example shows an empty tank less than anybody else because he’s gifted with his size and speed. It’s in him to play exactly the way he does. Not all players are built different hat way. I believe Pedon is staying true to his words which is almost a lost art in todays world. I respect that a ton. I still believe next year will be a lot different because of Pedon staying the course with what he believes in.

I prefer Mal catching and shooting off a nicely placed pass. He's got a quick release. Glad he's on the team. He , Burford and Knight all have nice paint moves to create as well.

Good point. Short answer is no. I just don’t see how any of this team finds traction in the portal. Burford being the exception. IMO.
Idk about this one. I think a few of them could honestly find some spots I. The portal but hopefully they will stay

Miscellaneous thoughts outside of roster construction. We have to get faster and we have to get stronger. Our athleticism and strength are not only bottom-tier of our league, it would be bottom-tier in the majority of conferences. We are slow and we are weak. It needs to be addressed.

We have to stop fouling. We have to defend inside the perimeter. The biggest non-negotiable is not turning the basketball over when you aren’t pressured. We are 352/363 in the country in non-steal turnovers. Stop throwing the basketball out of bounds. Stop misreading cuts and giving away possession because you panic and throw it where a guy used to be. 41% of our shots come from three and we shoot 33%.

Quite honestly, I think the system we are running on both offense and defense needs to be address and reviewed and changed to fit personnel. We are below the D1 average in almost every statistical category. I get that we want the roster to improve, but if it only does marginally we can’t run the systems we are running now and expect improvement.
I think the offense is what it is because of the talent we have. Trust me I see Pedon doing what he can do with this particular bunch. I don’t know if many coaches that could have this team in the top 4 of this conference right now. A lot goes into this more than any of us could possibly know. If we as fans have so many unanswered questions let’s put ourselves in Pedon’s spot. It’s an all but impossible situation in the first year.

I have started to waiver on the "everyone needs to go to the portal stance." Poindexter, Burford, Kasubke, maybe Lewis/McChesney. Gentlemen, you are the core! Assuming some strategic portal signings and the 3 Fresh adding some depth, the returning core determines the fate of the 23-24 season. They all need to be in a gym getting up 100s of shots each day and working on their areas of growth. That should be the first media day question. "How much were you in the gym this summer?" I would be interested to hear honest answers. The core should be able to get us to 5th/6th in the MVC next year and lined for the top 4 in 24-25. If the returning core is as skilled and talented as some folks think they are, this shouldn't be unrealistic. A repeat of this year is unacceptable.

Jackie and Phil both had the build of power forwards, but were forced to play the five. Pairing with a legit big would have worked wonders for them (Jackie even had some three-point touch!) - which is why I wish Threloff had stuck around and gotten his 10-15 boards per game as a Redbird instead of at NIU.

Kendall Lewis needs a true dominant five around him rather than a doppelgänger of what he already is: he’s about Jackie’s height, but slightly more of Phil’s build.

He actually reminds me of both Tony Lewis and Kellen Thornton, which causes me to mess up his name constantly.
You may love Jordan, but slice those rebound numbers in half (about seven) and nine points in about twenty-four minutes per contest. Still, paired with someone else who could put up similar numbers, could have filled a void.

That void has pretty much remained unfilled since Dinma graduated. Reggie Lynch was a legit big before he bolted, and Middlebrooks would have, too, had he made it past his first semester, but the Redbirds have otherwise been undersized in the middle for the past decade.

I am watching the UNI Belmont game right now. UNI is going to trouble because they have great young kids. Belmont also has some great young pieces. This being said I would prefer Pedon build a program from the ground up. There is a core of now veteran players here that seem to have embraced the culture. Kas, Mal, Lewis, Burford and cheese. That core just needs some help and not be expected to play at a high level for 36+ minutes a game. So I would prefer Pedon grabs a couple more freshman than transfers. Build the culture build the program.
