To be fair, what did he add? Didn’t reel in any big recruits. Nobody really got better under him. Fine with him here fine with him gone.
Exactly! He put his fair share of holes in the boat. Like Curly, from The Three Stooges, with his "water let-er outer".

Like so many things about our hoops program, I'm of two minds about the new assistant. You know, like, I hate that damn near every damn thread turns into a HC Dan bashing, but I so wish we could move on from HC Dan.

On the one hand, it sure looks to me like ISU has reached the point where we can't even hire a college assistant to join the coaching staff. We're hiring a HS coach it looks like. The word in college basketball land is that HC Dan is a lame duck and no one wants to come here.

On the other hand, we're bringing in guy who maybe has a focus on skill development (which is sorely needed) and a guy, as was pointed out above, who has some experience in throwing together a team in short order and getting it to work together, and maybe a guy who has some recruiting connections and can help bring in some talent (which we sorely, sorely need). Maybe can relate to the players better than what we have been seeing.

And on another hand, I want nothing to do with any of these basketball factories, or the kinds of kids I imagine - with all my uninformed biases - they bring in and work with.

Can't we bring in some hard-nosed Illinois and Indiana and Iowa kids, some guys who balled in Chicago or St. Louis, or Indy or Beer Town, etc. I don't need to see any more Florida kids or California kids or . . . . .

Oh well, here's hoping!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this quote from Johnson yet. This is very much what is going to have to happen this every season. It sounds like he is not someone who buys into the "we're young/unexperienced" mindset. I like the hire for because it brings some level of fresh life to the program (obviously it still has issues). I have to think he's got recruiting ties somehow with his experience.

You know that for certain?? Or is this an expression of opinion/frustration?

Lame duck or not. Brian Jones is top assistant and Belcher not far away. Not many current assistants we’d want to come be 3rd man. Get a guy that is young, hungry and wanting to make a name to build up. Zero problem with this hire.
Agree. One of the knocks on Muller's tenure is the lack of development (true or not, prolly at least somewhat true). Another is lack of focus on skills. Bringing in a guy known for developing players quickly and focusing on skill development can't be a total negative.

One additional thought/comment:

Supporting this hire is not blindly supporting Dan.

I didn't write it like I should have - I was speculating, I guess you'd call it, that we couldn't bring in an experienced college coach because the possibility exists that HC Dan won't be back and that is known out there in college hoops land. It was an expression of "one of the hands". So, it should have read something like 'could it be that the word is out that HC Dan won't be back . . . ." Just wondering if that was the case.

Remember when we had Yak? And he led us to the NIT? And we were the #1 seed? And playing at home? And could have played U of I?

So will the "young and developing learning to play together" win over 10 games this upcoming season?

If anyone has been watching the NBA draft combine, then they know that the guy with the biggest rise in stock (from maybe 2nd round to now maybe lottery territory) is Bones Hyland (VCU). He spent his spring working out with Coach Johnson at The Skill Factory . . . just sayin' . . .

You know, looking over at recruiting forums…Johnson is doing work with all of these connections. Birds have recently offered some 4 and 5 star guys. I’d assume it’s highly unlikely they come to ISU but the fact that Johnson is getting in the room with them is a major step in the right direction. I’m not sure Reese had the connections with players that Johnson has. Just looking on social media interactions, it seems all of Johnson’s players love him.
