I attended Saturday's game in Section 107 with a few buddies and met some middle aged (like us) Redbird fans there. They were loud and as enthusiastic as we have been for many years. We stand, we cheer, and we try to get some energy into the section. All that changed after some b*tch kept telling us to sit down. Every fan base has fans that suck, so here is my suggestion and since every one of my suggestions to ISU usually gets met with an eye roll, I do not expect this to go very far, but what about a section for those who wish to sit on their hands and, apparently, enjoy the game by not getting involved and not cheering. That way the rest of us can attempt to breath some life into the stands and maybe, just maybe let the team know some of us care enough to root them on.

People like this suck all the energy and enjoyment out of the game, so let them sit around like minded "fans" and enjoy the peace, quiet and solitude of their afternoon.

C'mon ISU, carve out a niche in the stands for the "hard core" fans who would rather yell at the enthusiastic "real" fans than cheer for the home team. So f'ing annoying to be told to sit down by our own fan base. If that's how you wish to enjoy sports, please become a badley bball fan and attend games there, you will fit in nicely, or stay at home and watch it on the Ocho. Do us all a favor.

Agree with you. Put those types of fans in the upper bowl and get a student section behind the visiting team's bench. Older fans will never bring the energy of rabid students.

I have an even better idea... let's also give them all little nerf footballs .. what could go wrong with that ??

I'm a sitter.

But I'm a cheerer. I'm a clapper and a hooter and a "yell at the reffer". I'm loud and enthusiastic.

I stand when the Birds are lining up for the dive for the score. Or when it's 4th and short and the D needs to make a stop. I hoot and holler and stomp my feet on 3rd down, and stand up and jump up and down if the situation calls for it. I don't feel like I need some "life breathed" into me in the stands, I'm plenty jazzed up thank you very much. But I just do it most of the way sitting my a$$ in the seat I paid for. I don't sit on my hands, and I cheer the whole way.

This idea that the only way to enjoy the game, or show your enthusiasm, or "breathe life" into the crowd or stadium is by standing up is a bunch of crap. I have no problem with people standing up when it's a big play. But the idea that you have to stand the whole game as the only way to show you care is just crap.

But if they could put all the nervous standers together in one section, that would make me happy too. :D

P.S. I was not at the game Saturday so was not part of the effort to sit anyone down!!

I think I was one of those middle aged fans....as I was very enthusiastic and kept hearing the lady telling people to sit down. I think those were the only words she said all game. I hear ya - extremely annoying.

I agree. How about we let those people sit on the grass...where they can roll out a blanket, drink some wine, eat some cheese, and read some poetry to each other during media time outs.

I just do not understand people attending a game and acting like that. I'd take 2,000 rowdy, fired up fans over 10,000 idiots like this.

This is not a knock against you MadBird. We know you wouldn't tell anyone who is enjoying and adding atmosphere into the game (standing or sitting) to sit or quiet down. But this sentence is perfect as of why this "fan" section will never happen. In order for this to happen they would need to displace some of the people who are currently sitting in the section they want to use as a fan section. Believe it or not, people who spend money on something feel entitled to what they pay for and cannot be bothered to be moved. Rightfully so, they paid money for it.

I love the idea of a legit fan section, where no one tells anyone to sit down. ISU is on to something with these young alumni deals. For basketball, lets say they made the fan section behind the basket, opposite the student section. ISU could offer to grandfather ticket prices to those who don't want to move and move them to one of the center sections (a better seat) for the same price. There will still be fans who do not want to move, because people are stubborn and entitled. People love to have choices. No choice is more desirable than when it is taken away. Someone might not like their seat behind the basket and want to move....until they are told they have to. People don't want to be told what to do.

I'm sure with the support of young alumni and older young-alumni (hah) this group could fill behind the basket opposite the student section for basketball. For football, what they would have to do is move the "rowdy section" up to top 10-15 rows on the east side of Hancock. That way, no one's view is obstructed. Then again, people will want to "be able to see the whole field, that's why they paid for this seat."

In short, nothing is going to change. It comes down to those fans who do want to stand, and cheer, having to get told by another "fan" to sit down, and not obliging. Then you have this whole social situation of blatantly ignoring a request and being rude. At the same time, the rudeness began with the "fan" telling the stander to sit down. There is no solution, but there are a couple of ideas.

Section 107 has been the Young Alumni section since the renovation. I wouldn't really worry about 1 person and an isolated incident because I've had season tickets there since 2013 and never had a problem yelling or getting into the game during key defensive stands.

If we are talking about standing for the entire game I think you need to go get seats as close to the students as you can on the West side.

We weren't standing the whole game. We stood after a great play. And good to hang with you, ThisIsTheLineup.

If I had to bet I doubt this infamous Lady will be there for NDSU (she'll probably be over at the Lady's house that got fireworks banned after TD's :x ). Bring all the energy you want for that game because we are going to need it!!

Little by little I think more Young Alums will keep filling Section 107 because it's a smoking good deal at $50-60/season ticket.

I started with season tickets in the young alumni section as the deal was too good too pass up. After a couple years I wanted to move as I became more interested.

I think they should start by offering a standing area, where you can intermingle a little bit anyways. Teams like the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins are ahead of the game by understanding that the trend is that a growing number of people don't want to sit period. That's not to say they are ahead of the times, in terms of political correctness.

Well gobirds85 - you must of gotten the SOB's who usually sit in Sec 103 row 18 seats 17 & 18 - these pricks poked me in the back in the 4th quarter of the Indy State game - when we were standing for a 4th down play with about 4 minutes or so to go. The only other time we stood were on scoring plays. Needless to say - that was a confrontation that was not pleasant. I deal with unpleasant situations in my work on a weekly basis - not that big a deal for me. They were not there for Homecoming and were absence last Saturday. Fine with me and my group.

I think we need a lot more passion from our fans - either you care or you do not. I am in my mid-50's and can bellow pretty good, but there needs to be many more than the 12 in my group.

Sounds like we have a solution....we just need a Redbirdfan.net section. Problem solved.

My brothers and I have shared Hawks tickets for close to 30 years. If you stand up while the puck is in play you will be told to "Wait for a whistle". And trust me the next time you will. Yet, somehow the place gets pretty loud.
There are 3 kinds of standing up.
1. The kind of standing that starts down low and builds through the stadium. The big play kind of stuff.
2. The guy who stands up to tell Spack how to coach and I miss a play.
3. The dumbass who stands up as the balls snapped to go get his girlfriend popcorn.
I've got no problem with #1.
