I know this is related to FBS, but I have been working on the website for years (kind of a passion of mine) and would love input/discussion.

I could even see the format taking on a World Cup soccer type of philosophy where FCS programs have a chance to move up and replace lower level FBS programs.

Anyway, take a look...

A co-worker has long thought the big boys will eventually try and implement is a two-prong approach that fits best for them:

a.) all "profit" sports will stay aligned the way the currently are, with minor tweaks among the BCS boys proper (i.e. very few more will get to join that party) - protecting their turf
b.) all other sports would be more geographically aligned to cut costs (much like the mid-majors are today)

of course, this only really benefits the haves ~ but they hold the hammer.

Funny how the pandemic has shook up their foundation.

What do you think of my proposed playoff system and conference alignment?

Personally, I think it works better when schools within the same state would be in the same conference (even division if doable).

I think most folks who are not alums or fans of FBS schools would not mind seeing something along these lines; however, there is no way the likes of Illinois/Northwestern are giving up any coin whatsoever or even indirectly risk bringing up the program the likes of Northern Illinois. The same holds true with Indiana/Purdue/Notre Dame and Ball State ... and that doesn't even cover the states of Michigan and Ohio where there are more small than big brothers. The big boys will not even visit the small fry today.

And, if some entity were able to try and force this, the current set of P5s would just form a new self-contained governing entity.

Are there any parallels to be drawn with the NIT in the 50s here? Fans of the team on the hill will tell you that the NIT was arguably the better tournament still when the Gargoyles won it a few times in the 50s & 60s.

I've read about the quandary facing teams in these early days. Their champ got an auto-bid to NCAA-sponsored D-I men's basketball championship, but it was widely thought that the NIT was the better tournament. The NCAA tournament started in '39, which is earlier than I thought. But it took until the 60s for it to become the undisputed crowner of the new national champion in the court of public opinion.

So, if the NCAA announced that it was sponsoring a tournament to determine the NCAA-sanctioned FBS champion, would anyone show up? The critical question is similar to the one faced by men's bball teams back in the day. Eventually the NCAA-sanctioned event won out.
