Ok, let's try this again. Keep the discussion ISU related. Not on if you agree or disagree with what Lyons has said, no one cares about your opinion. If we can't do this, then we won't talk about it.

It's now been picked up by the Trib and Sun Times.

Well the first time this thread went up a lot of people cared about opinions because there were plenty of reaction emojis tacked on. Give this thread liberty or give it death.

As far as this issue goes I hope the heart of the storm has passed. We'll see.

FWIW, I think Lyons screwed up. Should he be fired? No. Should he resign because of this? No. But it is time for Larry to retire. And, frankly, would not be bad time to hire a qualified minority and/or female candidate who's hungry to prove something, has a backbone, and a vision.

Given today’s ridiculous climate, he could have put more thought into his comments. That said, I barely care anymore. I went from being a rabid fan of football (pro & college), basketball (college), baseball (HS, college, pro) and hockey to not even caring about any of them anymore. And you know what, I’m actually fine without.

I've always been a sports nut. Now Redbird Athletics and my 4 year old's leagues are the only sports I care about. Hopefully national politics don't make their way into 4 year olds' sports leagues.

What's the point of having this thread if people cannot opine on whether they agree or disagree with Lyons opinion? It's pretty disheartening to hear from an Admin that nobody cares about one's opinion on a message board. Good grief

I think all this politics should stay out of sports. In all levels of sports, pro on down. This will and probably already has, ruined sports.
As for ISU, I wonder how many scholarships will be cut in the coming years because of lack of $ from Covid issues and now strife with racial issues.
One of these new demands by the students from this Lyons controversy is to hire a more diverse staff. It sounds like ISU athletes are boycotting until these demands are met. I would like to know how demanding one hire a specific race over another is not the definition of racial discrimination.
That is truly a real question??... How can ISU athletes demand such a thing?

I think Larry has spent the last 5+ months trying to figure out how to patch the titanic after it hit the iceberg in terms of finances. Whether that’s an excuse as to if he should have known that “all lives matter” vs “black lives matter” was a flashpoint is up for debate.

I do believe though that it’s pretty ballsy for a 19-22 year old, who is receiving a gift of thousands dollars in free education only because they can play a sport, to make demands on the very thing providing them that discounted or free education.

Larry should have "read the room." He didn't and opened up a can of worms that he cannot close. He is the wrong man for the job and needs to retire. The sooner, the better.

I think this ends John paxson style where Larry ends up 'taking another position' within the athletic department and they hire a new AD.

At some point someone has to stand up and say enough of the woke nonsense. You cant run an organization with the rank and file telling you what to do. Its the same way with the teachers union here. If this is what its going to come to just get rid of sports.

Why cant the athletes demand these things? The athletes are the ones with all the leverage. It's not like the athletic department is going to replace hundreds of D1 athletes with a bunch of townie scrubs and lose even more money when they suck for years to come. Not to mention the horrible PR. Every single athletic department member would be fired if they decided to get rid of all the athletes who refused to go back to practice and it would be a sea of national TV crews packing campus for days with no action just with a threat. The athletic department literally doesnt have a leg to stand on. Once athletes realize theyre the ones in power things will change. Not just for the equality movement but within the NCAA as a whole.

You dont give in to demands from anybody. That is how small children get what they want. The university can absolutely get rid of them or get rid of athletics all together. There are plenty on the academic side that would be perfectly fine with getting rid of athletics.

Following the remarks by Larry Lyons the Athletic dept. was confronted with a list of demands. Rather than comment on specific demands I'm going to comment macro picture style on a major issue our country is facing.

Does the U.S. want to be the land of equal opportunity? The land of equal outcome? Both? Neither?

I say the land of equal opportunity, not equal outcome.

We can do better to provide equal opportunity. We need to meet the basic needs of low income families including preschool. After that we need to address disparities in our public schools. But gradually, after that, it should fall back to the individual to determine their own fate.

We shouldn't guarantee equal outcome. That doesn't ask the individual to place any skin in the game. Regardless of the color of that skin.

If we guarantee equal outcome then we can have Person A -
Person A runs a small business. Person A works 70 hours a week. Person A employs 3 other people. Person A pays both individual and business taxes. After many years of hard work Person A will have enough savings to send his two kids to Illinois State University without loans.

and Person B
has been fired from 3 jobs and has quit looking for work. Stays home and smokes weed 7 days a week. Supports no one.

A guarantee of equal outcome would dictate that these two should enjoy roughly the same quality of life. If you want to ruin America promise everyone equal outcome.

A conversation including an airing of grievances would be great. Demands are entirely selfish and show no consideration for the other party. That type of communication only leads to further hostilities.
You really think theyre being selfish after being oppressed since the first boat arrived hundreds of years ago? Just because they arent in chains doesnt mean theyre living great. If I were them my list would be a mile long

“Them”?

I thought we were talking about student athletes getting tuition, room and board. And a lot of those athlete are white.
