I think if they're in the portal, contact is okay. Don't think you can encourage them to get in the pool tho.
No, I meant, are you allowed to encourage kids from other programs to transfer.
I’m guessing that would be a violation?

I believe it is a recruiting violation for coaches/staff to reach out to a kid while he is still under scholarship at another school. That said, I know this happens a lot, and teams are very rarely investigated let alone punished.

Complete gray area. I know of a kid that isn’t done with his season, but has already told those who need to know that he’s going into the portal and has a list of schools he’d like to contact him when he goes in. If that person tells the right connection and a coach is waiting on the 13th, that isn’t technically a violation. It’s just sketchy. But sketchy recruiting is the name of the game in the portal.

Q7: What happens if a student-athlete had impermissible communications, directly or indirectly, with coaching staff or boosters at the Division I school to which they transfer?

A7: Existing recruiting rules prohibit communication and contact with a student-athlete enrolled at another NCAA school prior to the student-athlete appearing in the NCAA Transfer Portal. These rules also prohibit the indirect use of third parties contacting individuals on the student-athlete’s behalf (e.g., family member, scholastic or no scholastic coach, advisor). Certain violations of these rules can constitute a significant breach of conduct as it relates to the NCAA infractions process. A student-athlete’s eligibility can be jeopardized at the school that engaged in impermissible communication.

If the kid is initiating it then I don’t have much of a problem. It’s the boosters and staffs that get in a kids ear that drives me insane.

I believe it was $300k and a Porsche
You beat me to it. And his double figure scoring run combined with a 37 pt game...wonder if that has 'qualified' for a raise...shoot, I mean, more NIL opportunities. Pardon myself, I make light. Frankly if I had a son in his shoes he'd be making Kentucky $$ too.

Completely agree! What an incredible life experience this must have been. Living in "Wildcat Lodge" which is an incredible complex for the basketball team. Could easy be an episode of MTV Cribs.

It is quite interesting to think about how much this kid's life has changed in a year. I complain about NIL, mainly the effect on school's like ISU...but I can't help but say way to go, 'Tonioooooo.

BTW...who remembers the economics instructor Tony O?!

Going sideways here but Tony Ostrosky was an ENGAGED and enthusiastic teacher...and an engaged teacher makes all the difference in the world. If every college professor were like TonyO...

Take his level of engagement and enthusiasm...apply it to your life...and watch your life change for the better. Way better. Over 30 yrs and I still remember the cat vividly. Thanks TonyO!👊

Tony O led my study abroad group to Austria in the Fall of '78 for the semester. I played on intramural teams with Tony and softball for a few years after college. Absolutely, a great guy.

While it's a violation for the coaches, staff, boosters to reach out, I would think the returning players are reaching out to other players all the time? Maybe @Popsto4 can speak to that if comfortable? The way these kids are connected through AAU and social media, I would think they are communicating all time.

I don't know the rules around player interactions, I suspect is a large grey area that is even less policed than staff.

All that being said, I know that Staff's recruit off of other team's rosters all the time, and very rarely do they get investigated, and usually only in extreme cases.

I just don't see how they could possibly police Player A at ISU texting Player B at another school. Take that times 8-10 players and everyone they are connected to, I would think the players do quite a bit of recruiting. I could be way off.
