I’m not into calling for specific guys to leave. I’d expect 4 or 5 scholarships to open. The staff is actively recruiting for next year and we have an assistant coach spot to fill. I’ll assume Kotov and Sissoko will not be back based on senior day participation so I’d expect another 2-3 to leave.

Let the fun begin. Onwards and upwards.

And who are you thinking will leave?

As I review the roster, I think the question marks revolve around Andrews, Schmitt, and Petrakis. I think they all enjoy being Redbirds. The question is if they will opt to transfer in order to get more playing time elsewhere. Petrakis has already had many different stops so maybe he finishes up his final season of eligibility as a redbird. I think we will for sure fill two open scholarships and will fill additional scholarships if any of the above three players opt to leave.

Of the 3 mentioned, I only see a slight case for Petrakis moving on. He at least have some film on himself at a prior stop. Kids don’t really understand the importance of having film during the transferring process. To be quite honest I think all 3 may be taking a risk if actually leaving.

Is this implying it’s their choice to leave? Without film it’s harder, sure. But it’s also pretty challenging to be a successful Division I head coach if you can’t be honest with kids and tell them the situation isn’t working. You don’t keep your job letting kids who can’t see the floor stick around to use up scholarships.

Over 1700 Div 1 men's basketball players transferred last year...according to a May 2022 statistic. Somewhere along the lines of 4-5 per team. Obviously many variables play into that. Nevertheless, it's quite eye-opening.

Hulk, you do bring up a good point. How many kids will want to transfer and therefore transfer out, and how many will Ryan encourage to transfer or flat out tell them to transfer?

Not to get into the weeds too much, but I’d expect Sissoko, Kotov, Andrews and one of Schmitt, Petrakis. I think KLew will be back after his post game comments Thursday. No clue on Liam but I’d lean towards coming back.

Coming from the other direction . . . . coaching changes are starting to happen, players may be looking for brighter horizons, greener grass. Assistant coaches also available if we end up needing one.

Bowling Green, Austin Peay, Idaho, Green Bay, Bucknell

As a coach, are you allowed to “encourage” kids to transfer?

Yes and that’s a conversation that’s more than likely to happen. We will see.

Only thing I can say to that is. Things like that will never be known to spectators/fans they will undoubtedly be kept in house. Truth always prevail my friends.

Well, isn't the scholarship still an "annual" thing? You tell a kid you're not going to renew the schollie and that's "encouragement"?
No, I meant, are you allowed to encourage kids from other programs to transfer.
I’m guessing that would be a violation?

Technically, yes. But it's done all the time . . . under the board. Coaches can find ways to let a kid no he's interested without actually him--or having any of his coaches--talking to the kid.
