We shot 50 % plus the first half while making 30% from three. Ergo we were scoring in close so what do we do to start the second half? Hoist up 6/7 threes and only two shots inside. 33% for the game. Then come out in OT and score first three baskets inside. Drives me crazy.

This team will struggle in the second half, especially with games Sandage can’t go and the bench becoming even shorter.

You will see more Sissoko, Kotov, and whatever walk-on is playing ahead of scholarship guys if we get into foul trouble because Knight and Kasubke are having to fill in for where Sandage’s minutes are.

This team has the effort to beat anyone in a 1-game setting. It does not have the consistency and depth right now to win 3-4 games in March. If McChesney can find his game again like Lewis has and Sandage can get back on the court, we could be in a whole lot better shape.

I would like some thoughts on this: opposing player wildly jumps in the air while we have the ball. Should we be going up more with a shot to take advantage of that and get the foul?

Nice to get the "W" in such a disjointed game. Cannot recall the last game where there were so many offensive fouls (and various kinds, no less) were called.

Along a similar front, at around the 7:41 mark in the second half, Burford receives an inbound pass, backs into Anderson for a turnaround jumper, misses the shot but gets his own rebound, banks that in, then trips over Anderson on the floor. It was a bit of a surprise that, with all of the whistles being blown, no foul of any kind (block/charge/flop) was called. Wondered at the time, if the defender in question was (for example) Sandage (who appears to have garnered a reputation), would it had been officiated differently?

And to those who thought it was "addition by subtraction" when DB could not go last game versus the Salukis, not sure we win this one if he was unavailable.

Plus, for any of us who think we may have personnel or rotations figured out, Kotov was back down to only two minutes played whereas there was the first Malcolm Miller sighting of the year (for five).

Excellent excellent summation.

Great to get the win. Disjointed, scrambled, physical and generally ugly game. Again, it was free throws that decided this contest.

It was a great win. The first half was the best half of ball this season. I thought Mal played his best game at pg. he was looking to for assist when touching the paint which is good to see of him finally.

Great start that carried to a solid first half. Terrible start to the second and it got ugly from there. Couldn't stop Anderson all night. Really good game from Burf. I thought KLew's drive late in the game to foul out Okani was a huge play - and smart, taking it to him knowing he had 4. Nice to see the students be pretty engaged most of the game too. Winning ugly is still winning.

This I so thought that, that at least a block should have been called. If you look at Anderson I thought his feet were definitely in the cylinder in the lane.
I also thought that Okani got away with a hook on Kusubke but a foul was called on Kasubke and Okani went to the line.

Glad we won but Circle sucks. Gotta get Sandage back. We need that one more extra body. Belmont and Bradley coming up. That'll say a lot. Damn, I wish the Bradley game was on a weekend.

I don’t want to start a new recruiting thread and haven’t seen if this was mentioned but Zack Hawkinson out of Springfield (2023 kid) was in attendance.

Sitting by home team tunnel. Ty Pence visited with him at half time.
AAU teammates. That Mid-Pro team was so stacked, I don't know how they ever lost a game. Players going to Iowa (2), Mizzou, ILST, Southern Alabama, now looking like Hawkinson going D1 in some capacity as well. I saw him play a bit in the SFHC and I wish I would've seen more. Kid is a baller.

This game was just so strangely officiated on both sides of the ball. Birds got most of the calls in the first half and UIC got most in the second.

Regarding DB, I agree Birds don't pull this one out without him and especially if they were out both DB and Sandage. That would've likely made your first guard off the bench one of the walk-ons.

Pedon mentioned in the postgame that he felt going in that this would be a game Malcolm would be able to contribute to...I think it was more, "we should be able to beat these guys and empty the bench" which by all accounts, they should have. Play the second half the way they played the first and we're sitting here talking about a 20+ point win.

One area of feedback I have is Anderson, UIC's kid that went off, he had 3 fouls and it seemed the Birds were afraid to drive on him. I think he easily could've fouled out during regulation. The guys in stripes weren't paying attention to how he was guarding when he got posted up (holding), but I think all of ISUs guards he was matched up on, Birds had a step and could've gotten fouled.

Anyway, on to Belmont. Try not to let Sheperd go off for 40. It's been a long time since that game at Redbird.
