Grad transfer with two years. Was preseason all-conf selection before injuring his knee. He played in only their first two games this season.

A guy that can help on the glass and pass out of the post would be a welcome addition.

Would be a great addition. Did you read that we were interested or are you just saying he looks like someone we should go after?

I had a twitter update this morning that said several of my followers followed this kid. One of them was Penny Collins. I assume that's why there's "interest."

Yep. Anything I post as "Interest" means 1) one of our coaches is following him, or 2) a scout or coach near the kid has said we're checking in on the kid.

Not sure if this would be grad transfer or straight up transfer, have conflicting messages out there.

Ryan Welage, 6-9/205, stretch-4, transferring from San Jose St., originally from Greensburg, IN

Avg’d 18 & 5 at SJSU this past season as a junior. Would have 1 year eligibility. Coach who recruited him resigned late last summer. New head coach must not have made a good impression. Team was 5-25 (1-17) in MWC.

Video on Verbal Commits . . . I can’t help but think Jimmy Chitwood only taller.

Please, God. No more of these grad transfer players. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

How can you say no to Jimmy Chitwood? You know he'll make the shot.

I'm wondering if we will have any interest in Nick Norton; averaged about 8 points and 4-5 assists a game for UAB. I have to think Bloomington-Normal would be high on his list of places to consider.

I advocate plugging in a grad transfer. You pretty much know what you're going to get from them having D1 experience vs a JUCO (think Dom Johnson, Boo Richardson, Will Tinsley) where it may take half a season or more for them to get used to it. Sometimes you find someone local or at least from IL. Others, it's a former HS or AAU teammate of someone on the roster, so there could be an easy transition to get someone in the fold.

Where a grad transfer in a season like next year can impact you is it adds to the people you are likely to have to replace after the season. You are essentially going all-in for next year with PF, KE, MY, and WT all leaving.

Agree considering transfers has to be a part of the process. Certainly plan on building the team via the normal recruiting process and look to plug in short term holes as needed with grad transfers. Given that D 1 has over 700 transfers annually it would be foolish to avoid considering any grad transfers.

Absolutely should consider, but don't bring in a grad transfer who's not going to be a significant contributor. I'd rather have an open slot. Which...does anyone know if we have an open slot currently, anyway??

I believe Muller is meeting with Michael Finke today. Over 50 schools have shown interest in Finke. Wake Forest and Vanderbilt have both been in for home visits.

Norton has one year and will visit Drake and Missouri State this week, and Ohio State next week.

From The Athletic:

Ryan Welage, F, San Jose State: Welage tells The Fieldhouse that Xavier, UNC-Greensboro, Belmont and Baylor are the leaders for his services. He was also contacted by Loyola-Chicago and Illinois State on Thursday and he’s considering both schools. The junior forward averaged 18.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this past season. He will have to sit out next season and have one year left to play.
