FINALLY, it's Game Week for Redbird Football. The flag is flying at the TR House to indicate that Redbird Football is IN season. I know, you look out the window and it looks more like Winter Olympic weather than college football weather, but I'm grateful for anything. I'm also very impressed with the toughness and dedication of our football team. These guys have had to practice in everything. Freezing cold, rain, wind - you name it. I always cringe when someone talks about players getting a "free" education. Most of the team does have at least a partial scholarship but to get that support they have to lift weights , attend team meetings, and this year they have had to practice in the most bone-chilling cold ever. It's hard to play the game when you can't feel your fingers. They work their asses off that "free" education. And some guys aren't even on scholarship.

Hang in there guys. There's another cold week ahead but Game Day in Springfield, Mo is supposed to be over 40 degrees. By then the polar vortex will have moved on and the worst of it should be over. College football weather is coming up.

Beyond the weather, there's a difficult challlenge to overcome in the Missouri State Bears. They got a chance to learn their new system under new Coach Bobby Petrino in the fall when they played 3 games while most of the conference was idle. That will give them an advantage. It does provide us with some film of a Petrino team at MSU but Petrino keeps bringing in QB's with strong credentials so we're not really sure which one we'll face.

We know who our QB is, it's Bryce Jefferson. We can't just hand off to the tailback anymore. He'll have to complete some passes or become a rushing threat in his own right. Jefferson is a good all-around athlete. Has he improved enough to ignite the offense?

On defense we will field some new names and faces but the defense is underrated. The Redbird D has reloaded. They'll need to be good because Bobby Petrino is a highly accomplished offensive coach. He's been the HC at Arkansas and Louisville in the FBS and HC of the Atlanta Falcons is the NFL. He's had more ups and downs than a street junkie but I don't think anyone has ever said he can't come up with a good offensive game plan. The Bear offense will be ready. The Birds defense and in fact the whole team should be ready to take off in 40 degree weather. Should be a great opener. GAME WEEK - FINALLY!

This is pretty much a must win game for us.

I think we're in pretty good shape with our first team. There will be a lot of guys whose playing time is going to jump, especially as we dip into the backups. But I think we have enough depth that we will see players who are ready to contribute.

It's hard to imagine that the passing game is fully ready. Given the experience we have on the line, and the talent at RB, I think we'll still be handing it off most of the time.

Jefferson is a question mark. He played well in the playoffs last year but that was just a handful of games. He managed the games well, made a few nice throws but the vast majority of the time he simply had to hand off to JR without falling down. The coaching staff asked very little of him except not to lose the games. This season will be different and it will be interesting to see. He is a good athlete and can run the ball when he needs to. The passing game is the big question mark. One improvement over last season is with the extra time between seasons the receiving corps should be healthy and ready to go. Last season the receiving corps was beaten up all year. I still hate the Co-Coordinator thing that seems to be Coach Spack's automatic default. The offensive side of the ball is just simply not Spack's forte. Great defense, good running backs, decent O-line but QBs and the passing game have not been a highlight of Coach Spack's Redbird teams. Tre is the one exception but outside of him, it has been pretty much mediocre in the passing attack. It will definitely be interesting to see how the offense performs and develops this season. Go Redbirds!

I hope the receiving corp is healthy. Edgar has been on the mend and while he's likely to play he could be less than 100%. If Edgar doesn't start I expect them to go with Grimes and Khepera at WR with Rutkiewicz in the slot.

I think the "Co" Offensive Coord situation is really more of a 1A and a 1B with Coach CJ Irvin being the 1A. Irvin will be calling the plays. Go Redbirds!

Have heard very little about Rutkiewicz this spring. It does look like we'll be using a lot of different receivers...perhaps someone or a couple will really emerge during games. And in a near annual statement, I'd like to see more throws to the tight ends.

Co-coordinators seems to be a thing across college football. Perhaps it is a sign of how things are actually done by the team of coaches these days.

Edgar is so good it is a shame he has battled injuries. I hope he is healthy and ready to play. Grimes just seemed to be becoming an impact guy when his injury took him off the field. I wonder if they will use him on punt returns. If I remember way, way back to last season he dropped a few. Rutkiewicz was a surprise last year but came up big at times. Jefferson should have targets to toss to. I am really interested to see what they do this year on offense. I don't expect much different on defense but new faces and coaches on the offensive side should bring some new twists I am thinking.

I don't disagree with Spack's QB "history" - I never could understand it tho, since Joe Tiller had a pretty wide open offense. QB's at Purdue when Spack was there -- Jim Everett (when Spack was a GA), ?? from 91-94, then Drew Brees, Kyle Orton, and Curtis Painter. You'd think he'd have picked up on how helpful it is to have a decent QB.

There seems to be this deal with "run game coordinators" and "pass game coordinators" and I wonder if that is some of what goes behind the "co-offensive coordinator" thing?

Jefferson's HS blurb from his ISU bio:

Decatur Central HS: Four-year varsity letterwinner … threw for over 2,000 yards as a senior, while also running for nearly 1,400 yards on the ground … earned all-state and all-conference honors, while being named the conference MVP … tied his own school record with six passing touchdowns in a game ... threw for nearly 2,000 yards and rushed for 685 as a junior … earned all-state and all-conference honors and was named conference player of the year for the second-straight year … completed 65 percent of passes for over 1,900 yards as a sophomore to earn all-conference honors … helped team to four straight league titles and the most wins in school history … also a standout on the basketball court as a three-year starter.

Have no idea how tough his HS conference was, and I know HS stats don't always translate to college performance, but those aren't bad stats. Almost 6K yards passing in his career?? Seems like he should be able to get it done.

They just have to let him throw. I don't know why we were treating him like a WR playing QB last season. They kid can hit a target AND run. Let him throw the ball 15+ yards down field and use his legs to move the pocket and force the linebackers to stay under.

He is going to throw picks and that is okay. Give him freedom. All state and conference MVP is good enough for me.

in playoffs, he averaged 7 passes per game ... too few even for rookie, but understandable given how season ended - it looked dire heading into playoffs .. not even Robinson was getting yards after Davis went down. Luckily, we played a very weak/small run defense in SEMO. Then played a solid UCA run defense, but nothing like we see in upper half of MVFC. So we got away without a pass game in pass playoffs.

Given extended (albeit limited due to pandemic) offseason of prep and he is now the clear #1, he should be ready to "graduate" to 15+ passes per game, if not 20. I watched some extended highlights from NDSU game ... Jefferson is shiftier and maybe a little faster than Trey Lance "was". He will get some read option yards for sure, which will take some pressure off of our young RB group.

Still taking wait & see approach to his pure pass game. I wouldn't blame Spack entirely if he brought him along slowly there .. but again, 15+ passes at a minimum .. give him a chance to develop.

But I also wonder like others, did Davis move on because Jefferson made good progress ... I tend to think that was at least part of it.

Here is run game from the NDSU playoff game .. Bryce ran very well and outgained Lance in a game that was played in trenches. Granted, our run defense was stronger.

I am not down on Jefferson at all. We just don't know how he will perform in-game conditions based on the three playoff games. They have to let him throw or the one-dimensional game will hurt them.
Picks are not okay. Especially if the Birds end up as a usual Spack team with tough defense and running the ball almost exclusively. Picks in that scenario will absolutely kill a team.

I think our approach in the playoffs last year (year before last?) was to lace 'em up and make the other guy beat us. No mistakes. I thought Jefferson's decision making with the ROs was rock solid in the SEMO and UCA games. A little less so against NDSU, but we still had the ball with an opportunity to win late in the 4th quarter. Anxious to see what the kid can do.

How in the heck can a QB gain confidence with his passing game when the coaching staff shows no confidence. This is demonstrated by the type of pass plays called and the lack of them. That sounds an extremely strong message to the QB. So, until the coaching staff shows confidence, I do not expect the QB to play with confidence. The passing and running calls should be reasonably close to even at half and the end of the game - against a reasonable opponent. I understand if the score is lopsided, one way or another.
