Fair warning: Mark Adam’s is on the call.
They’re talking very positively about Rey.

As far as “former Redbirds” Tulsa has a lot of “almost Redbirds” on their Roster. Rey, of course, but also guys the Birds recruited and were in the mix on to the end. Elijah Joiner, Curtis Heywood II, and Peyton Ubancic.

Samuels from TCU had 16 points and 18 rebounds against Tulsa yesterday. I saw some of that game and he still looks slow on defense

Coach Yak at UIC picked up an impressive victory yesterday over Valpo, 66-50 as the Flames improve to 3-0. Wins are all D1, against NIU, Central Michigan and Valpo.

6 players from the Chicago land area (only two last season) on his roster including an "Almost Redbird" and Iowa State transfer, Zion Griffin. Yak's son is a walk-on on the team but hasn't played. I believe Griffin Yaklich held an offer from Detroit Mercy and opted to play for his dad, instead.

Josh Jefferson is an important part of UW Green Bay's team is trying to do. They're 0-4 with losses to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Eastern Ill, and Marquette. JJ is averaging over 30 ppg, with 14.8 points, 34% from the floor, 30% from three, 62% from FT, 3.8 rebounds, nine total assists and 10 total turnovers. No doubt the kid can score, just needs a lot of shots to do it.

The other kid we have that is playing D1 that transferred out, Rey Idowu is a role player for 1-2 Tulsa. A win over UT-Arlington and a pair of losses to South Carolina and TCU. They've had their last two games postponed. In 23.5 minutes, Rey is averaging 7.7 points on 67% shooting (10/15), and 5.7 rebounds. 2 assists, 5 turnovers and 0 blocks. Seems like he's settled nicely into his role.

I've watched both play this year.

Vs. Wisconsin, I thought Josh looked a little helter-skelter, did some chuckin', but was definitely an important part of the team, as you say. Vs. Marquette he looked much better, so maybe he was just having some early season dysfunction at UW.

Rey, watched vs. So. Carolina, and he looked pretty good, got a shout out from Mark Adams for a nice reception underneath and a dunk, but still didn't look like much of a stud on the defensive boards. But definitely looked like he belonged out there with the team.

Josh numbers are not very efficient. I saw two of Rey's games (or at least a portion) ... he continues to struggle on the defensive end in my opinion.

Monthly update on Rey and JJ

Josh Jefferson is averaging 13.9 ppg, 3.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.9 turnovers for 1-9 UW-GB. He is shooting 37.4% from the field and 28.9% from three.

Tulsa has started really strong in the American with wins over Memphis, #5 Houston, Cincy, and lesser team USF. In 21.9 minutes, Rey is scoring 8.9 points, grabbing 4.6 rebounds, and 1.4 turnovers per game. He is shooting 58.7% from the floor and 50% from the line. Rey is benefiting from being in a system that fits him better. Good for him. Tulsa's leading assist guy, Eliajh Joiner (9.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.3 TO, 48.3% from 2 and 36.4% from 3) was HEAVILY recruited but ILST out of high school. If memory serves, the Birds were in his top 3.

On the season he's averaging 22 min, 9.2 points, and 4.5 rebounds. Last year 16.7 min 4.4 points and 3.2 rebounds. So he's clearly better, which he should be as a JR. Looking back I wouldn't have played him over Fisher or Hillsman. But this year he's also got some clunkers. So I guess it tells me not to cherry-pick stats.

Yeah, you know, lots of folks had higher expectations for the guy as a freshman or soph, just takes a while for some guys (lots of people on this board are willing to dump a guy if he's not a "star" after 10 or 20 games). Maybe better coaching and/or skill development. System fits better. Who knows?
