"I don't know why there's rumors."

I'll venture a guess. Maybe because Muller has apparently failed at this level as a head coach and the alums are sick and tired of the drastic decline since 2016-2017 and the continuing suckage? (Yes, I realize the AD is stating what he feels he must to show support for what many feel is the albatross hanging around the program's neck.) If indeed Muller is going to be back next year, then there had better be several "come to Jesus" discussions taking place behind the scenes.

I’m sure there is a group on here that will say, he’s just settling in on the job, but come on. If he can’t tell how bad the situation and can’t come up with a better response than, “I don’t know why there are rumors” then maybe the AD is over his head

Don’t worry Dan’s best buddy and media suck up chimes in.

“Making a coaching change based off such an unusual season doesn't seem right, not at ISU or anywhere. The NCAA is giving every player an extra year of eligibility because of this season's unique circumstances. Don't coaches deserve the same "mulligan"?”

“ISU isn't that far away from competing for the Valley's upper division next season.”

Dan has had three years of "mulligans." Not counting numerous poor coaching decisions in the previous six years. If he hasn't developed into a good coach after 9 years, it isn't going to happen. Some guys have it. Some don't. Dan falls into the latter group. #firedanmuller

As much as I hate the buyout as the reason to keep Dan, I would have a lot more respect for Brennan if he gave some sort of response acknowledging it. I agree with Quinn here that it’s very tone deaf and a punch in the gut to I assume most serious isu basketball fans.

So now "competing for the league's upper division" is the goal? Funny. I thought the goal was to be a fairly consistent NIT caliber program with occasional NCAA appearances. Way to set the bar high, Benson. I didn't realize ISU was paying $600,000 per year to compete for a fifth place finish in a conference that is not as strong as it used to be. Perhaps Benson needs to acknowledge that if Muller's name was "Smith," he coached for some program other than Illinois State, and he was only 2 for 9 in making it to the NIT and 0 for 9 in making it to the NCAA tournament, Benson would not be surprised at all if the coach deserved the axe. About the only thing Benson wrote that isn't a shield for Dan is the Lyon's legacy of the horrifically bad contract.

Next year, Benson will have another excuse!

Nah if ISU is going to keep him you can't scare off recruits or current players by suggesting the only thing keeping Muller at ISU is the buyout.

Also: I get the "don't know why there's rumors" is a bit tone deaf, but this isn't exactly a ringing endorsement:

"I have really nothing to say. He's our coach. I don't know why there's rumors," said Brennan, who took over as ISU's athletic director in mid-January. "There's no truth to the rumors he's leaving ... he's not going anywhere."

Interesting that Benson said they expect to have 3 to 4 scholarships openings this year.

Dan better dip into that $600,000 pocket and get some recruits. He will need it!

Saying he isn’t leaving doesn’t mean they won’t fire him. Makes it seem like there hasn’t been any talk with Muller leaving on his terms but that doesn’t mean they still might not let him go.

Saying all that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is back next year

Read it out loud, it will make more sense
Ok, sure, Muller's schedules are better. However, college basketball coaching is a results driven business. So, despite the eloquence of your post, Dan is not a good coach. He has nowhere near enough winning. Its time for a change, regardless of your mastery of English and simple logic.
