LETS SAY, for argument's sake, that you let Spack go and 1/3rd of the roster transfers out.

How many seasons of 4 or less wins do you give the next guy before you are calling for HIS head? Because it will be at LEAST 2 (I argue, probably 4) before there is a winning season.
Those are big assumptions; 1/3 of the roster?? Come on! I would not call for the guys head in 2-4 years. This is not the SEC. You assume a lot

Yes 1/3 how many plates did we lose with Covid and transfer rules. When new coaches take over they are going to tell kids find another school because the kid may not fit new schemes and was not recruited by his staff. Some older experienced players will not want to go through 2yrs of a rebuild process. Look WKU and FSU an see how many kids exited and how many were let go with new incoming staff 25 plus

I think 1/3rd is actually conservative. We have, what? 56 scholarships? I don't think it is outside the realm of possibility that 20-25 bail. With the new transfer rules, players can leave at any time for almost any reason. Hell, even if Spack stays, you'll likely see 4-5 hit the portal. That is the state of modern college football.

But yes, 1/3rd (18), I think is assured.

And, no this isn't the SEC, but I have a feeling a guy like you (and, honestly, some of the greater fan base) feels that the further we get away from a national title or an FBS jump, the closer we should be to finding a new coach. A new coach, at this point, is not going to get us any closer to either of those things and, honestly, may add years to those timelines.

You know what, you guys are all right. He’s doing a great job. This is fine. He’s doing a fine job. Give him a raise. Let’s get a gofundme together. If he leaves we will lose almost half our roster and the next guy will lose for 2-3 years at least. I can’t believe I wasn’t thinking of those things.

Well, then, let's play your game. Do you have any realistic suggestions, as in names, for a replacement or are we playing the "change for change sake/anybody else" game? See, fans like you crack me up. Kinda like political pundits, education grumblers, and food critics : point out the weakness and fault, but fail to provide any viable solution.

Seriously, I'd like to hear 5 names of who, realistically should be the next ISU football coach that would bring us to your Promised Land?

Good points. That's kinda where I am on all of this. Spack came to us as a Defensive Coordinator at a Big 10+ school almost 15 years ago - is it still likely that that kind of thing would happen? Are FBS coordinators looking at FCS head coach gigs these days? Maybe they are, I just don't know.

Take a chance on a DII or DIII head coach? Hire North Central's HC? Whitewater's? Northwest MIssouri's?

A coordinator from a solid FCS program, like NDSU or ??? Someone from a lower level FBS?

Who is more likely to "take ISU to the promised land" in the short run -- Spack (former FBS D coordinator with 15 years of HC experience and a few playoff experiences) or some new guy? Legit question.

I'm trying to avoid feeding into this thread (at least until the season is officially over) and have always been a Spack backer. Would like to see ISU back in the playoffs, contending for the conference championship.

I said you guys were all right. He's doing a good job. No need for 5 names. He's staying. This is all fine.

Jeff Thorne would be a brilliant hire if and when Brock decides it's time to go fishing. He was 46-4 at North Central and is now the OC at Western Michigan. He's a QB guru. Great football family. Tons of ties to Illinois high school football coaches. Everyone loves the guy.

I would like to add that while 6-5 may have been a great season when Spack arrived, FCS football has lost a lot of teams to the FBS levels and has become much more watered down. Making the playoffs nowadays is not nearly the accomplishment it was 5-10-15 years ago. No more App State, James Madison, Georgia southern etc
I had not thought about the teams moving up. This is a good point but much more impacting in the playoffs. During the regular season, it does not hit everyone, mainly the teams in the conferences those top teams used to be in. For ISU the MVFC is the MVFC. They did not play those teams unless they hit the playoffs.

This isn't like P5 FBS where you are going to have a shortlist of known candidates. Like Madbird said, you could be looking at FBS coords/coaches, DII DIII Head Coaches, or lower-level FCS coaches. I had never heard of Todd Berry before he came here from East Carolina (OC), but he turned out to be a fantastic hire. The next Redbird football coach could also be someone none of has heard of, but that could be years away.

Very great suggestion. Checks the boxes for sure. Not a "slash" hire, but very efficient decision. Me likey...

  1. Tommy Rees might be a pipe dream, but that would be a home run - both on the local recruiting and OC/strategy front.
  2. I like 39-year-old Gino Guidigli from Cincinnati. Fickell is a Top 6 5 favorite coach 4 me, and he has this guy poking the buttons on that side.
  3. Sherrone Moore is a guy we might not be able to afford; but can you imagine the impact? A B10 African-American OC? Dynamite!
  4. Have Coach Berry come back and have a "swan song" 2023 with Spack calling the D and the wizard getting that wing/sweep going again.
  5. TP Guy and an Uber from RA/Cefcu to the Kauffman.
