Seems to be a good effort for the first committee ranking. Surprisingly no big surprise.

agree with chi redbird ... an NAU owes us a thank you.

This does possibly suggest their win over us was given a lot of consideration, because nothing else on their resume screams top 10 .. they lost by 18 to WIU at home, and then by 38 to FBS team. Their next 2 best wins were both against two 4-4 teams at home, then home again over a 2-5 team, and then away at two 0-8 teams.

We have to win this week over WIU .. then see what this does for our top 10.

NAU is at 5-3 Mont and also has 6-2 SUU in final week .. both tough games.

SDSU has very tough remaining schedule : NDSU, ISUr, and then away at USD.

Wofford is 2n weakest link in top 10 .. barely beat everyone on their weak SOS, but have 2 weak teams remaining before their FBS game

Elon has Towson, but then UNH and JMU.

SHSU plays Little Sisters of the Poor, than Hadley School for Blind, then plays Even Littler Sisters of the Poor to close out season :D

UCA .. same as above in different order

JSU ... different conference, but oddly also plays same schedule as SHSU and UCA

USD has very tough remaining schedule ... at UNI, at NDSU, SDSU

NDSU .. ditto USD, SDSU, ISUr .. murderers row for all 4 teams

Hope this committee sees these final 3 weeks for what they are ... an MVFC gauntlet awaits the top 4 MVFC teams, While SHSU, UCA, and JSU all play 3 cream puffs. And the others play very little in comparison to MVFC teams. Wofford and NAU resumes are weakest.

The guy talked about the importance of SOS, quality wins and losses, versus weak wins and losses ... SOS contrast is stark these last 3 weeks. Let the MVFC War of attrition begin !!

I have trouble jibing this with other sources that we consider pretty reliable...

- Sagarin: 1. NDSU, 3. USD, 4. SDSU, 5. WIU, 6. UNI, 7. Redbirds, 8. YSU (7 of top 10)
- Massey: 1. NDSU, 3. USD, 4. SDSU, 5. UNI, 6. WIU, 7. Redbirds (6 of top 10)
- Even the Massey Composite (includes 41 ratings) has 5 of top 10...

Bottom line is that there is a spoils system in FCS where you can play bad teams, go 10-1 (or worse), and collect your prize. It ain't right.

My favorite poll far and away is the Massey Composite you showed above .. it is the average of 35 polls .. many different statistical systems and subjective polling systems.

I don't think Sagarin, by itself, makes for a very good ranking system .. it tends to cluster and become self perpetuating of teams in strongest conferences. It also struggled to rank teams across all college divisions with 600+ colleges .. it gets some pretty stupid results at certain extreme ends of each. Massey does to, but seems less prone to clustering teams in same conferences than Sagarin.

Issue is this ... by end of season, statistical polls like these tend to over-ranking some teams from the toughest conferences .. and similarly some teams from weakest conferences. For me, best time of year to rely on statistical systems is weeks 6-7, after everyone has played 3 or 4 nonconf and 3 or 4 conf games. As you get towards weeks 9, 10, 11 .. it becomes hard for teams from other conferences to break into upper tier unless they dominated nonconf.

What I like most about Massey is the ability to quickly assess strength of schedule when comparing teams with similar records. But you have to somewhat temper those SOS for above.

That all said, I really like the Massey Composite for ranking teams and conferences.

Haley seems to think we were among the first couple right outside the 10:

Once again, I see no reason to take the pressure of the Committee by using the Rankings from Organizations they endorse. Massey exposes the politics of a Committee loaded with representatives from Conferences competing for relevance in light of the MVC. Come out and see the #7 ISU Redbirds vs the #9 Western Illinois Necks. Why does the Athletic Dept. endorse polls that minimize ISU?

Hey RBDad ... playing devils advocate ... What if WIU decided to use Rothman or Self, both of which rank WIU #4 ? Can we still say their #9, even while they say their #4 ?

4th,
If I was Western's Sports Info Dept I sure would!
Citing Massey isn't even being a homer. I'll cite the arguments that you and so many others have made that Massey is the least political and most scientific of the Polls out there. It should be the Poll most often cited. Especially by ISU if it RANKS ISU HIGHER THAN STATS !!!!

The fundamental point is that our Sports Info People either don't know about Massey [unacceptable] or for some reason feel the need to understate our programs ranking [misplaced humility, NOT THEIR JOB!].

On related note, what will keep Spack at ISU is the support he receives from ISU, Alumni and Blo/No.
What that "Support" means:
1. Indoor Practice Facility
2. Blo/No embracing Program - never want to hear about High School Playoff conflicts again!!! Everyone who lives in Blo No should be an ISU fan. Hell, ISU should be marketing the Redbirds as the only Football Program in Central IL worth watching! That should translate into a full stadium every week. Southern is in MO., Western is in Forgotonia, Eastern is in Charleston [enough said!] and U of I sucks! U of I's best players come to ISU!!!
3. Alumni Support- more efforts to get Alumni back for games. Is Improving I think??? But Chicago, St Louis, Milwaukee, Indy should all have active Alumni support.
4. Increased Student Support - Out of 22,000 + students we should be able to get 4-5K to games. I don't believe students fill stadiums or can be expected to financially support programs but there should be more pride of school. The realities of issues around drinking means less student support. College kids will always choose drinking over all else. That explains why the other 15K aren't going to come.
5. Improving Game Day Experience- ISU does good job on this. Can always be better. Embrace Season Ticket holders and regular tailgaters.
6. STOP UNDERSELLING THE PROGRAM! Using Stats Ranking is a perfect example. BE HOMERS! Thats' not a bad thing. Let others talk down ISU's program, don't do it for them. Go Birds! We love being down, makes the rising from the ashes that much more fun!
