Nice win going into the break against a team who gave SIU, Murray State all they can handle and beat Valpo by 13,
- H, he is starting to settle into his role and doing a nice job with it. As Pedon said happy to see the game pay him back.
- Good to see Liam back, while clearly not 100% and only 5 minutes in the 2nd half some minutes were helpful off the bench. Now get back to full strength.
- Malachi and Luke off the bench are starting to be weapons. Both are shooting better then 40% from 3 and with the defense they play both will be playing during crunch time. With the way H has played now you can start to see the bench kind of taking shape for MVC play and that could be a strength of the team. Saw a statistic in the last 7 games the Birds have had 7 different scorers, which is a statistic that I love and makes the Birds hard to guard because you don't know who you have to stop.
-Congrats on a good win, safe travels to everyone this week/weekend and Happy Holidays.

Yo Sarge, Mc Cheese first name is Liam……too much Arizona sun Bro 😎

Fast break and entry Lobs to paint have consistently been poor/mediocre all season - lobs have led to turnovers and it’s a teaching moment Coach Pedon!!

Love r grit and buyin from Team. These guys r a FUN watch!

Now we wait. Really looking forward to being a "student for a day" on 12/31. I think I'll leave the pre-game kegstands in the 90s though...hope to see a lot of people in Redbird that afternoon.

Planning on being there too. Not sure how much of the old crew I can round up, but the cheerleading coach is already demanding my presence so I might have to come out of retirement for a game. Agreed on the pregame rituals, will have to do this one far less fueled than the old days 😄

What kind of pregame throwback drinks could a local Redbird bar serve to coincide with “student for a day”? Pink Vodka Lemonade pitchers (Shanigan’s) come to mind…

The ball sticks on one side way too much this is becoming aggravating to me

This aggravates me as well. I didn't see much of the first half as I was out at the lake visiting my grandfather (who does not have internet), but in the second half our offense often looked like it was happening by accident where we strand the ball, or strand a player on his own driving into coverage. Makes us easy to guard and results in an iffy 3pt shot.

My other thoughts:

-Mal continues to look like the most comfortable shooting the ball from 3. I think we need to get more off ball movement to get him and Luke more open shots that they aren't having to work for.

-I agree with others, were I the coach I'd be making these guys run fastbreak drills until they get spacing and passing right. A couple of times we blew easy fb buckets because we forced it 1x1.

-Sissoko is looking more and more comfortable with his role and reminds me of guys like Tony Lewis (or Josh Philips if you watched 2nd season of Last Chance U) who do all the little "dirty" jobs to help a team win.

- I'd still love to see us run my Hi-Low sets with K-Lew and Knight, or post whichever of those two draws the smaller guy until they switch. We have a pair of guys who are 6'7 and super athletic and I like those type of sets would capitalize on that, and open up more things on the perimeter for Mal, Luke, and Sandy.

-I'll take any W we can get though.

Sorry "Ron". That's what I get or not being blocked by Benson yet. 😉 Must be the time difference 🤷. I took his word on the name change

Agree on the lobs. We tend to lob it away

Long Islands (Mulligan's) comes to mind, though those usually did most of their damage before Hairbangers Ball shows next door at Daddios.

Our typical gameday ritual in those days was slam a few warmup beers while congregating, walk across the street to the Pub for a couple pitchers, on to congregation #2 at another apt right near Main, which usually included baseball (the drinking game), or the occasional case race before booking it across the street to the arena when the doors opened.

Now to come up with a beer/cocktail name encompassing that... 😄

Quinn...."I mean, NBA championship.....random December game vs Chicago St. Sure those are close to the same."

You missed my point. It does not matter what game it is. The fact is, you don't have to be 100% to contribute. I was happy to see Liam out there toughing it out and getting his game legs back.

One thing I haven't seen talked about yet is the drastic change in the last two games versus the previous 3. During the three-game win streak, the Birds went to the line 17, 34, and 27 times. In the last two games (one blow out loss and one game that should've been a blow out win) they went 13 and 6 times. As many have said, this offense so far becomes stagnant at times. A great way to counter that is by being the aggressor and force the issue. Get in the paint and get to the line. That is what propelled ISU during their win streak. The last two games, the guys have been hesitant to get paint touches and have been out physicialed. Get back to doing what works. Cut and drive to the basket, and kick out when it makes sense. Play off two feet. There were a handful of times where DB would drive to the bucket and kick out while in the air, which lead to TOs.

The Birds made some good plays last night and were the better team. ISU might be the only team in the country with a shot clock violation in every game. There was some luck mixed in there as well with some whistles going their way. Sissoko definitely flopped on one of his charges ;).

Glad to be going into the Xmas break with a W. Pedon said in the postgame that they'll let the guys go home for a few days and return for practice on Xmas night with a game on Dec 28. Always interesting to see how a new coach handles the holidays.

55 gallon barrels of Kool-Aid and Everclear (flashing back to 1989 here) spread throughout the concourse of Redbird. That'll be one rowdy crowd. Maybe we can get Toby Keith to supply the cups. Hulka, though, will be participating with tea and strudels.

Am I one of the few who thought we didn't play very well? Glad we got the win, though. I think a lot of these close Chicago St games have to do with their opposition not taking them as a tough opponent, given their decades of substandard history.

We have Old Style and Malört - together they form the vaunted

🤝 Chicago Handshake 🤝

No Stroh’s, though…
I never liked Strohs but it definitely was on campus in mod to late 80s. There used to debates between BUD and Old Style between Chicago based students and students from central and southern illinois. Coors started distribution in Illinois whn i went to school and was a premium.
