This is important for our depth of bigs. He didn't have great numbers by any means at UMASS but having D1 experienced "Big" will only help.

When he signed on, I was concerned he may be an issue in the locker room. I'd heard some stories of him being a "me over we" guy. Hopefully, he gets that straightened out and becomes a good teammate. Seems like a freak athlete.

I'm always a little skeptical of the guys brought in from Minnesota. Hopefully Sy's relationship with Josiah with keep him grounded.

Me too. I call it the Jigga factor.

"As of right now he has to be a lot more consistent (in practice) and really buy in to competing at a higher level in order to help our team on game night," said Muller. "Because of those things, he hasn't played better than the other guys. That could certainly change. Maybe the news will change his motivation level or just being here longer will get him to understand what we expect."

"We're happy Sy got his waiver and it gives us another option on the frontcourt," said Muller. "Now it's up to Sy if he ever earns minutes and his daily habits."

Ummm....yeah.

Talk about calling out your playing in public.

I don't expect much according to that. In fact, unless they absolutely need him I bet they hope he sits and redshirts. Unfortunately, there is very little chance of that happening.

On the one hand, there are a lot of really decent DI players coming out of Minnesota. The Jones brothers at Duke come to mind right away, Oturu from Gopher U. was just an NBA draft pick, Coffey from last year is in the pros, Wisconsin has made hay with a bunch of Minnesota guys over the years, etc. etc.

Then, on the other hand, there is the Jigga factor :)

But geez, you don't have to read all that much between the lines in Coach Dan's comments that Sy isn't really jumping at his opportunity here so far. Maybe he was just waiting to hear he didn't have to sit out for a year??

So for now, count me as one who thinks Sy isn't really going to light it up in this stop on his college career. Hate to be cynical about it. Another example of Coach Dan bringing in a player who isn't his kind of guy and then will spend a year or more or less chewing his ass to get him to buy in?

I love it. Hold players accountable.

Side note: the likelihood of any player redshirting this year is slim to none. The whole, "everyone gets another year of eligibility," is really eliminating the point of Redshirts. Might as well get young guys experience without "burning a year."

Colorado's star guard McKinley Wright is a Minnesotan. In fact, I think he played with ISU's guys in high school.

This is nothing but good for a team that seems thin in the frontcourt. I'm glad Coach is taking a stance that guys who don't buy into the team culture he wants won't play. I'm a Dan fan but his biggest failing in my mind was letting talent override a team first attitude in determining playing time.

I agree, but the season is just starting. They haven't even made it to the first game. I'm surprised Sy got thrown under the bus so quick.

It isn’t the first time he’s publicly mentioned Sy’s lack of motivation. My guess is Dan’s beyond frustrated with Sy not showing up with the right attitude.

Simple solution to the hold guys accountable, throw them under the bus crap that has become the norm with Coach Dan - bring in guys who meet your standards from the get go,! You have just 13 scholarships and there are plenty of guys out there. Tired of the same ol Groundhog Day stuff with our program. I hope Chatman has a great career with ISU and will root for him. So should our coach.

The Minutemen started 5-0 without Chatman, who watched from his room as UMass got off to its best start since 2013-14.

“It was fun. I’m in my room, screaming and yelling at the TV, just watching,” Chatman said. “Like when Sean [East] hit that crazy shot, I was literally in my room screaming. It was fun watching them play, and that just made me even want to get back out here and just be on the court even faster.”

The undisclosed personal reasons that led to Chatman’s early absence fueled plenty of speculation, from transfer possibilities to potential academic issues; according to the man himself, it was just personal.

“I was just going through some personal things that I just had to handle and figure out with my family,” Chatman said. “I just had to take a step back from like social media, everything, just get my life together and make sure I’m mentally good.

“I’m doing great. Just happy to be out here, ready to play tomorrow.”

Two weeks later Chatman entered the transfer portal. This kid sounds like deja vu all over again.

Not to veer too far from the topic, but here's graphic from today's Minneapolis paper about the top kids from Minn playing college ball this year. Sy didn't make the list:

Wow. Nicholls State, Ball State, George Washington, and NDSU and Sy didnt get a mention. Couple that with his problems already and I am leaning towards won't be good here and won't finihs college here.

I mean, if you want to go that route, Josiah Strong didn't get mentioned either.

My expectations for Sy are pretty low, so . . . I'm hopeful he'll prove me wrong, but pretty pessimistic he'll do that.
