Me too. I call it the Jigga factor. This is important for our depth of bigs. He didn't have great numbers by any means at UMASS but having D1 experienced "Big" will only help.
When he signed on, I was concerned he may be an issue in the locker room. I'd heard some stories of him being a "me over we" guy. Hopefully, he gets that straightened out and becomes a good teammate. Seems like a freak athlete.
I'm always a little skeptical of the guys brought in from Minnesota. Hopefully Sy's relationship with Josiah with keep him grounded.
"As of right now he has to be a lot more consistent (in practice) and really buy in to competing at a higher level in order to help our team on game night," said Muller. "Because of those things, he hasn't played better than the other guys. That could certainly change. Maybe the news will change his motivation level or just being here longer will get him to understand what we expect."
"We're happy Sy got his waiver and it gives us another option on the frontcourt," said Muller. "Now it's up to Sy if he ever earns minutes and his daily habits."
I love it. Hold players accountable.Talk about calling out your playing in public.
I don't expect much according to that. In fact, unless they absolutely need him I bet they hope he sits and redshirts. Unfortunately, there is very little chance of that happening.
On the one hand, there are a lot of really decent DI players coming out of Minnesota. The Jones brothers at Duke come to mind right away, Oturu from Gopher U. was just an NBA draft pick, Coffey from last year is in the pros, Wisconsin has made hay with a bunch of Minnesota guys over the years, etc. etc.
Then, on the other hand, there is the Jigga factor
But geez, you don't have to read all that much between the lines in Coach Dan's comments that Sy isn't really jumping at his opportunity here so far. Maybe he was just waiting to hear he didn't have to sit out for a year??
So for now, count me as one who thinks Sy isn't really going to light it up in this stop on his college career. Hate to be cynical about it. Another example of Coach Dan bringing in a player who isn't his kind of guy and then will spend a year or more or less chewing his ass to get him to buy in?
I agree, but the season is just starting. They haven't even made it to the first game. I'm surprised Sy got thrown under the bus so quick. This is nothing but good for a team that seems thin in the frontcourt. I'm glad Coach is taking a stance that guys who don't buy into the team culture he wants won't play. I'm a Dan fan but his biggest failing in my mind was letting talent override a team first attitude in determining playing time.
which part. the waiver or the calling out? dan, should just punch him next timeThis is a MUCH bigger deal than I think we are giving it credit for.
This one got me.which part. the waiver or the calling out? dan, should just punch him next time
It isn’t the first time he’s publicly mentioned Sy’s lack of motivation. My guess is Dan’s beyond frustrated with Sy not showing up with the right attitude.I agree, but the season is just starting. They haven't even made it to the first game. I'm surprised Sy got thrown under the bus so quick.
I mean, if you want to go that route, Josiah Strong didn't get mentioned either. Not to veer too far from the topic, but here's graphic from today's Minneapolis paper about the top kids from Minn playing college ball this year. Sy didn't make the list:
