As the other ISU sports (men and women) are growing and making their respective NCAA dances, it is ok for the Men's program to change and reevolve. NCAAMB is becoming an unruly beast. Due to rule changes and any dedication to the school and program that are signing in the signing period are a thing of the past. So ISU and other schools are starting to find players that they hope that will stay on from signing day to graduation.
Due to the instant gratification that most kids have, the grass will always look better in the other school yard. If ISU doesn't make the dance or DM is to tough or expects to much, and that all that matters to them, well they are not in the right place. That being said, the chances are that the more talented athlete will trend to go to the quick notoriety and exposure schools. Hence, mid level to lower level schools and conferences will have more dedicated student athletes but will be just that, lower to mid level. ISU is there to educate, teach and graduate. Not to be a NBA combine and wash the true GPA of an athlete that was enrolled for 9 months. We as fans and alumni, have to understand the changing landscape that is NCAAMB and understand the place and roll that ISU needs to be in it.
The student athlete is a student 1st and an athlete 2nd. We should always need to keep that in mind. Change is not easy but not a bad thing.

Wow. That's about the best damn thing I've read on here in a long time. Kudos.

So, lets go D3 non-scholarship and quit wasting our money on D1 basketball then? If the focus is teaching and educating, put the resources into that.

Man - I really disagree 100000% with this post. I have a feeling if you shared this sentiment with HCDM he would disagree with you quite a bit as well.

There is a changing landscape in college bball - always will be... Adapt or die. If you provide a "yard" that people want to play in, they wont leave. That is Dan and the admins job to figure out.

ISU never has and never will be the home for future NBA players - there are only 60 of them drafted every year... That does not mean ISU cannot be a competitive perennial NCAA tournament team. The MVC is about as weak as ever. If Wichita St was still around, they would be dancing every year. As much as we hate the Shox, we all are envious of what Gregg built - and wish Dan could replicate that model. Dan's job is not to get Top 100 recruits (would be nice though)... But to get the best mid major caliber players out there. The guys like Mcintosh and P Lee. If he continues to win recruiting battles with LOW majors, we will not see success.

I would also go out on a limb and say over 90% of athletes choose ISU for athletic reasons over academic... Thats not an ISU thing, that is a college kid thing. So the student 1st concept is cute, but not realistic.

The student athlete is a student 1st and an athlete 2nd..... in what galaxy is that statement true? Even the schools where kids get partial scholarships to compete, they go because of the sport. And your comment about ISU basketball changing or evolving.... are u saying we need a new coach who actually has a realistic plan with continuity? If so, I'm all ears because we are in year 7 and barely have enough kids to fill half a roster next year. Make no mistake about it something is horribly wrong inside the program....

Thanks Matt Hein!

I always tell my kids there are two moments in history I will never forget where I was at and what I was doing. The Kennedy assassination and 9/11. That was until we subbed in Hein into the ‘17 semifinal. Those turnovers are something I will never forget.

Thanks for that fantastic contribution. You should write Matt a letter and tell him personally. Maybe even make a trip to FL and hand-deliver it to his parents, and read it out loud with them...then raid their fridge while you're at it.

1. Camelot changes forever.
2. Largest terrorist event on American soil.
3. Matt Hein turnovers.

Yeah, I can see the connection. Maybe you should take the summer off from redbirdfan.net. Good luck.

I do realize in re-reading this that perhaps you're making a joke. I love to laugh, for it's how I cope because I am as demented as they come.

Just seems awful even in jest.

FWIW, I blame Hein for Jamming and Trey coming out of their self-imposed exile . . .
