In the 1977 NIT, ISU played at Creighton in Round 1. This was a big deal because it was ISU 1st invite to a major tournament. I believe only 24 made the NCAA and 16 the NIT. ISU won the game for those of you too young to remember. Our bus was one of 2 or 3 that went to the game. We arrived in Omaha about 2 hours before game time and everyone went to a bar across the street from the Civic Center. There must have been 100 of us. Long story short....Warren Schmakel was the AD and he went to the bar too. Warren got up on a table in the middle of a bar in Omaha and led ISU cheers. Eventually, we all left and we closed a busy street to traffic while our group walked/stumbled to the stadium. That was quite the night.

Based off his Twitter profile, Reese is now an Asst. Coach of the German National Team.
Interesting. All of his images have been switched over to his alma mater. It certainly seems like his contract was not renewed versus him having an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

We went to the Creighton game also, then on to NY. I saw Wilkins at a McDonalds on Times Square wearing a baby blue Creighton t-shirt. Old style trolling.

Dammit Otis Birdsong.

I kind of wonder if Brennan had something to do with forcing Reese's contract not being renewed, essentially forcing Dan to make some changes. I find it hard to believe Dan would've chosen not to renew Reese. Johnson moving to Bloomington HS and Reese not being renewed were ways to shake things up and really put Dan on notice.

I'm very interested in seeing how Wills and Coach Rob improve the development of our players, as well as changing the culture. In seeing who Coach Rob follows on Twitter, he seems to be a strong advocate for kids who put it all out there, as well as kids who don't seem to be getting the attention he thinks they should be. I think that was an influence on his willingness to have players send him video so he could give them an honest appraisal, and help the kids get the chances they deserve.

Pathetic that we have to go back almost 50 years for a positive Redbird basketball experience (well, maybe beating TN in ‘97).
Makes me realize that being a Redbird fan is a lot like a 50 year old guy still reminiscing about that one girl in high school he kissed.
Sad...
