In a couple of our podcasts, we have mentioned the1990 NCAA Michigan game and how announcers didn't really expect ISU to compete and they didn't know our players very well. Here is a short video (2 to 3 minutes) highlighting some of that.

Loving the podcast of course, and the addition of all these old games to YT is icing on the cake. Gotta book Coop on the show so the NIT game vs. Washington St. can be found...it exists...not just in the vault in the arena somewhere...someone has it...they have to

Here's a teaser .... our next guest is not a coach, not a player, but definitely part of RB4L. This person is still a prominent figure in basketball. We will be posting next Monday!!

We got you covered on this one. You can go to our YouTube site and under old game we have that one. Here is the link to the site:

Here is the link to that game

Enjoy and let us know if it how you remember. I alway find going back to these games you see things you didn't initially recall.

Just finished . Sonny was every bit as good as I recalled. Very fun game. People may not remember how good Rotimi Alakija was for the Trees. He was a load. Only a soph. Tragically died at practice not long after this game. Very sad

Dan Butterly is our guest. He was a manager from 89 to 93 and current commissioner of the Big West Conference. He has some great stories and different perspective than perhaps a player and coach. He tells us why a being a manager can literally be a crappy job, find out his career scoring stats, more insight into the fight, and fund out if Mike VandeGarde was a confident player or not

I really enjoyed this one, because it corresponds with my time at ISU. This is a story about my experience at ISU so I apologize in advance, and you can cut it right here if you want to.

Dan's time was my heyday as a student. Started as a student, on the baseline in facepaint, for Mr Pembrook's (that would be Pemberton) senior season and ended up bouncing around in the athletic department before I decided to forego the biz.

All props to Butter!! I was jealous of him. Literally. Basketball was my favorite sport but I wasn't a good enough player to play into college. I was a good enough athlete to get a D2 offer in another sport. But for reasons i didn't totally understand my heart was set on ISU. My freshman year, a week into first semester...I see an ad in the world famous Vidette for a basketball manager. I thought holy sheep here we go. I had met Bender previously while walking through Redbird and I was so freakin' wow'ed with Redbird Arena AND starstruck with him...when he walked up to introduce himself to me..."Hey I'm Bob Bender, the head men's basketball coach here,"...all I could utter in return was "I know." I sounded arrogant. In reality as an 18 yr old I was man-crushed in the worst way.

Not a good first impression.

I desperately wanted to be a part of the basketball program. I set an appt with Margie Dillow and interviewed with Morris. Panush and Butter had already been hired. I underdressed. Led with my high school athletic accomplishments instead of what I could do to serve the team and something bigger than myself.🤦‍♂️ A lesson learned and a mistake I never made again. Morris told me I was late in applying and they probably had the last position filled but to come back in late spring and talk to him again.

Morris' face told me that I totally blew it and I knew it. And I held it against Butter!! All 4 years! Because I was jealous of him. I'd run into him around campus on rare occasion...I'd smile in his face but shake my head behind his back. Class-A prick I was!! Still am, I say!!

I worked a couple of MVC men's basketball tourneys (and a few other sports) and over a couple of yrs got to know Elgin and The Viv's and Watkins and Kern...and who's in my way again?? BUTTER!! But in reality I probably screwed my MVC chances when I accidentally spewed spittle out of my mouth (after having one too many Bud's)...and all over Jack Watkins' (NICEST man in the world, btw) darling wife while dining with them. This wasn't just one little spit droplet. This was the whole family clan. The petri dishes would have been in ecstasy! It literally landed all over her face. You know how you can say sorry and the apology is accepted, but by the look on a person's face its like they're just tolerating you from there?? Yep. I got the look from both of them...and I got the message. 1994 at Bennigan's. A turning point in my life. Those damn BUD Clydesdales got the best of me.

Now, despite my past jealousy... let me tell you something about Dan Butterly. That cat is absolutely OUTSTANDING at his craft and what he does. He has busted his @$$ over DECADES in this business, doing a little bit of everything...and all with an eternally optimistic attitude and a big smile on his face. I had ZERO reason to hold anything against you, Dan! I'm incredibly proud of where you are at today and I utterly celebrate for YOU, man!!!

He is a GOLDEN ISU alum, folks. BIG time. Dan Bell was an early 90's ISU grad and later a long-time top executive for Fox Sports...running the Sunday NFL pre-game show on Fox. Marlen Garcia is also an earlier 90's ISU grad who is an accomplished journalist with quite a portfolio of who she has written for...on a national scale. Then there's Butter. 1 of only 30 (30!) D1 Conference Commissioners. Outside of our celebrity friends these 3 are without question leaders of the 90's! There's probably more in there, I know, but as it relates directly to athletics these 3 are hard to beat.

Making ISU proud!!

One more thing about Butter. If you think it's easy being a Division 1 head basketball manager...THINK AGAIN. It is a FULL-TIME job, folks. At times...INCREDIBLY stressful. A thankless behind-the-scenes position that goes almost completely unrecognized. PLUS...you're a full-time student as well. And if you want the manager's job, you have to perform academically. There's no skimping on grades. And you're not a player so there are no favors academically, either. Make no mistake. IT. IS. HARD. I mean, can you imagine chasing Pemberton to the locker room while dodging the big dude's crop duster??? THANKLESS!!!🙃

There's not a manager who's done it better at ISU than Butter. This BIG WEST TopDog position wasn't handed to him. HE FLIPPING EARNED IT.

Dan Butterly is a reason we can all be proud of being associated with Illinois State University!!

Thanks for the memories, podcasters!

I know that was a mile long, so may I propose a new idea?

I would love a section in this forum where you can go just to tell a fun story regarding anything ISU as it relates to your experience. Not just the off-topic section. But a specific section to make us all reminisce.

Maybe it was the beer riots. Maybe it was the Rickie dunk. Did you see Doug play? Did you go deaf in Horton? Versace wig? A fun party story in SigPi? Meet your wife or husband here? What was Will Robinson like? Set Reggie on fire with your flaming tuba?

I want to hear the stories, your stories, and not just the griping and complaining. I come back to ISU regularly because of the nostalgia feeling I get every time I step on campus. I don't want to live in the past, yet I do want to hear about it!

Quinn...whaddya say?

Thanks for this post ... We really appreciated it.

I know it is can be perceived as self- promoting but hopefully everyone listens to this podcast because we had a great ISU Alum on the podcast and not because anything the three of us do. He has some great stories and offers a different perspective than players and coaches. I think we could all imagine as an 18 to 22 how you would handle getting lost in NJ, hosing down big Pemp or getting the player with one of the most iconic shots in a NCAA tourney game late to the airport.

Dan is sincere when he says that ISU and his experience as a Head Basketball manager helped him tremendously handle situations after college.

The good news is he wants to come on again and perhaps we can talk about some of his current duties and college basketball vs ISU stories. Here is a list of committees he has served since becoming the commissioner ... i think has some great insights that we would love for him to share.

NCAA Council (July 2021)

NCAA Council NIL subcommittee (March 2022)

NCAA Council Coordination Committee (July 2022)

NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee (July 2021); Vice-Chair (July 2022)

NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee Administrative Subcommittee (July 2022)

NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee Legislative Subcommittee (July 2021)

NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Competition Committee (July 2021)

Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee’s College Basketball Academy Working Group (March 2022)

DI Representative to DIIICA Officiating Advisory Committee (February 2022)

BTW ... we do try and take everyone's feedback. I know Dan B spoke about the altercation after the Creighton game but we talked with the players and are working on a recording in a couple of weeks with full disclosures ... I believe you requested that Humdinger

We are working on some 2017 players that were also requested/suggested. It's taking a little bit longer to get that arranged. I believe someone alsp suggested Sonny Roberts and we will have him on sometime in the fall.

Once again great post. Thanks for the support and really appreciate your point of view on this one.

It's a good idea.

I don't know that it warrants an entire board, though maybe. Maybe a topic under the general ISU talk?
