I'm digging scheduling these winnable FBS games. (Like CSU last year and 2 with NIU and...Illinois?)

Northern Illinois 2019
Illinois 2020
Western Michigan 2021
Wisconsin 2022
Iowa 2024
Northern Illinois 2025

ISU has not faced a MAC opponent since a 2013 contest at Ball State, but won a 2012 matchup at Eastern Washington.

I'm so confused about this sentence. How is the EWU win relevant?

I'm pretty sure he meant Eastern Michigan, who we kinda dominated.

EWU is a great deal better than EMU and I don't think we have ever gotten out of EWU's angry red turf alive, though I may be wrong.

Thanks man. Already planning to to go Madison. Never been to a game there. Kalamazoo is a pretty easy drive too.

That's right, we DID get through there. I only remember the NH game.

While that NH game was awesome, for me it was the EWU that made me think we had a shot at the whole thing that year.

This !

Up 25 after 3 qtrs, we steam rolled those guys on their own field and then put game on ice in Q4 to win by 13 ..... #ISUsucksatpreventdefense

UNH game, we were a little off, but they prepared very well for us. As TR thread reminsced, we could easily have lost that game but didn't .. then nearly repeated the formula against NDSU with late Roberson huge run .... #gamewas1:38toolong

This game replaced the win over Appalachian St as my favorite Redbird game. It remained my favorite for three weeks

Eastern Michigan is no longer the doormat they were when ISU handled them years ago. Won at Purdue last year and went bowling.

tough call ... blocked XP in OT to win on road against a perennial playoff contender .. Appy St game was a break thru game for Spack era .. even though I am of the strong opinion, the 2011 team that got snubbed was better than the 2012 team that made top 8. This made the Appy St win even better after getting snubbed in 2011.

Would agree EWU game was most impressive performance (for 3 qtrs), so that was fun to watch. Since I'm so bored with this offseason, and looking for anything interesting to talk about ... if I had to rank Spack era playoff wins:

#4 UNI 2014 ... statement blowout game at home after our worst game of season against UNI just 5 weeks earlier ... remember how our offense hit rock bottom and special teams gave game away.

#3 UNH 2014 ... huge win against #1 seed on road, but we didn't play well .. would be higher if we played better

#2 EWU 2014 .. best 3 qtrs of Redbird football, and on road against #4 seed

#1 Appy St 2012 ... huge win on road, break thru for Redbird program .. OT win on blocked XP by Shelby Harris to win by 1.

TE Oshaugnnessy had the winning TD catch. WR Walker "walked" all over their secondary with 10 catches for 176 yards. Our RB group was beat to sh-t by mid season, and workhourse RB Dunn played at far less than full strength just to get us thru rest of season. We went into EWU game that year with very depleted run game. Our pass defense struggled that game (and next at EWU) .. but battled all game for huge win on road against a top 8 team.

https://goredbirds.com/news/2012/12/1/120112aab_141.aspx .. here is game recap on Appy St.

I hadn’t yet comment on this, but I really like this game for a number of reasons.

Our future non-conference opponents/schedule is great. Hats off to whoever it is that is finding ways to get these deals done.

Wisconsin, Iowa, U if I, NIU, Western Michigan.....all great road trip games and intriguing matchups.

100% agreed .. these games check all the boxes .. P5 or good G5, payday, reachable by bus $$, some are even winnable. Got to give credit to AD Lyons for his FBS scheduling efforts .. been mostly very good.

CSU was a pretty good G5 team in 2017, but had very rough 2018, thanks in part to us .. but you don't really know these things at point these games get start getting negotiatied and scheduled. So this was a good get for us ... though I don't recall what we got paid, and we did have to spend some of it flying there.

Noting, I didn't like Ball St outcome with flipping the home&home, then letting them buy out the game at Hancock ... but it was impressive "get" to begin with .. they were a very good MAC team 2013 & prior, and we got a home&home scheduled with them. Ironically, if Hancock 2.0 would have been 100% ready for 2013 season start, we were slated to host them that year originally, but we were forced to do the flip ... reportedly anyway.

Anyway, Lyons takes some heat on this forum in other areas, but in this case, he gets big kudos. These FBS payday games are very important to our football program .. nicely done !!

p.s. keep working on 2023 FBS game and no more STX games !!!!!!

Nebraska is one of the best college gameday experiences. It looks like they have a good package deal worked out with NIU - 3 games on an every-other year basis. I wouldn't mind scheduling something like that with a school, if it's a good location and a good payday. A NW, Iowa, Indiana, etc.

Since IL is so close, I wouldn't mind doing it with them, and the NW turnout we had was great. At least their FB teams play the state's FCS schools a decent amount. IL has us in 2020, EIU in 2024, and SIU in 2026 on the books. NW has SIU in 2022 and MVFC school SDSU in 2026, so hopefully they'll add a few more games.

Hopefully, it’s less than 120 degrees when we play at Iowa. That game was a miserable experience.

That was hands down the hottest, most uncomfortable sporting event I ever attended. I couldn't stand it by the 3rd Q and had to go stand in the tunnel. EMT's were busy that day with fans passing out from the heat. It was comparable to Austin, TX heat in late August.

That said, Kinnick Stadium is awesome and Iowa fans were cool as hell.

I was in the student section with some friends I went to high school with. Student's were understandably not as friendly. Fun time, very hot. Little alcohol consumed because of the heat- probably for the best.

That Iowa game is number 2 on my list for worst heat games i've attended. I was at the Bears vs. Vikings game when they played at U of I. I have to say that game was still the hottest game. They ran out of water in the third quarter. But who am I kidding both games were miserable! Go Birds.
