I can’t honestly believe I’m saying this, but after the last two games, I’m think the Birds need McChesney at 3 spot. Valpo definitely isn‘t Wisconsin and McChesney disappeared in 2nd half in favor of Washington. Maybe they felt McChesney couldn’t match up w quickness, but their guards took ours to the rim continuously in 2nd half, even if he gets beat outside, he’s a threat, like Lewis to block from behind and helping off ball.

What happened to Washington? Nothing like the player last year. Probably better on defense. Looks out on control on offense. He did have one nice drive though.

I have no idea how Krikke didn’t foul out? Seemed he had 7-8 fouls. Then at the end of the game Valpo got calls at the rim yet no foul when King was all over Reeves at the basket? Also, how does a ref 25 feet away call a foul on Fleming when it looked like a jump when Valpo iced it away?

Make one more close shot and Birds win in regulation. Close losses aren’t going to save Dan’s job.

Fleming really had a bad game today. had his share of turnovers. The turnovers not only cost us points, it killed the mojo. I saw for the first time on the Redbirds faces this season, frustration. They fought their ass off, Mindset got better late in the game, we had a chance in regulation. They struggled today. Next game they will not.

Fleming looked rusty as hell. He looked okay getting boards and making two great passes to Reeves early that he couldn’t make the wide open 3s on. Once he got that first mistake it kind of snowballed. Hoping he gets a couple good practices.

Going to be an uphill battle. Likely a loss at home against Loyola then back on the road for 2. Could very easily be 1-4 after this stretch.

Fleming zero points and 7 turnovers. Killed us. At least the little guy could score. McChesney just not bringing much either. 2 boards no points. Schmidt shows flashes but can’t finish. Agree with other posters that we miss way too many bunnies too.

McChesney is fantastic outside of his offense. He’s not even looking to shoot and looks like a confidence thing. Moves the ball well and plays + defense. He deserves more PT over Washington. Schmitt. Again Schmitt. He’s fine for a backup. Does some good things and is catching up to this levels speed. Hardly the problem at this point.

A win would have simply been a win and perhaps a better chance to not play on Thursday in the tournament. There were some good things about today’s game and some bad things. In the big picture, the loss is nothing. We do play hard and we’re likely to upset a team or two the rest of the season. But the loss today only does one thing…the possibility of playing on Thursday is now greater. That’s all. Bring on Loyola.

A couple quick thoughts:

  1. Wisconsin did not switch and we scored 85 points. Valpo switched everything and we needed OT to reach 75 points. We struggled against their defense and turned the ball over too much.
  2. Reeves needed 24 shots to score 24 points. He also got beat three times off the dribble by Trevor Anderson, twice for an and-1. Anderson has had two knee surgeries already in his collegiate career. Not a good day for Reeves.
  3. Anyone remember the Barry Hinson rant were he said his wife could score against their big men because she would know to do a shot fake. I counted 4 possession in a row where Valpo scored because we fell for a shot fake. Most of those were by Krikke. It would have been 6 possessions in a row by Valpo but they missed two 3s.
  4. I thought our rebounding was improved and our offensive rebounding was very good. Other than item #2 and 3 our defense was okay.
  5. I’ve harped on Dan but I’m not sure I can pin this on him. The decision making by players needs to improve. I thought we played hard all game. The execution needs to be better. It’s as simple as that.

17 turnovers. With reeves and strong at the point in Wisconsin 9 turnovers. So maybe you do start McChesney at the three spot with Reeves at point.

Reeves struggled so badly shooting that I wonder if that tiny gym atmosphere had an impact.

when Valpo joined the league I told everyone that Valpo would beat us on a regular basis and you all thought I was crazy. Unfortunately is true , they have less Talent, less bench, but they still beat ISU that's one thing to do with coaching head coaching I love Dan but it's time for him to go.

Truth be told before ISU we'll leave for the Conference USA or the ACC, basketball program has to improve so or they will be attractive and that means finding a big-time coach that can make things happen and have a winning situation to match all the other sport

The team just seemed out of sorts. They didn't give up but they had no way of dealing with the doubling of our guards. We could never find the open man. I think they is where we missed Freeman the most. Tough loss but now time to get back to work for wed.

Yep on McChesney, why didn’t he get back in, forgotten on the bench last 12 minutes and the guards got taken to the rim. Both McChes and Schmitt need to be role players this season for the Birds- need for defense, rebounds and screens, and a few baskets are luxury but I’d prefer those shots being taken by Reeves, Strong, or Chatman around the basket. For last 3 seasons, I’ve raised the idea that Birds should be playing bigger, instead of putting 3-4 guards on the floor, not to increase offense, but to increase stops and get rebounds(that lead to transition where they get open looks or a put back). I know some have argued about who was a guard vs. forward, but I thought the Birds showed they were most competitive with Reeves, Strong, Chatman, Lewis and McChesney on the floor, today and last week.
