Just bringing this over from the Loyola game thread...

Dick is as good a man as he is a broadcaster. When I was in high school, probably a freshman, I knew wanted to get into sports broadcasting and grew up listening to Dick and was infatuated with radio. I reached out to him during Redbird football season and within hours he got back to me and had me up with him at the next home football game. He taught me some of the tricks of the trade and put me to work. He had me back for another game that season as well. Five years later, I got the opportunity to work with Dick on Redbird football and basketball broadcasts for three years when I was working in radio. He was always courteous and available to answer any and all questions. In business, and the media industry specifically, a lot of people do not see proper recognition for their work. To this day, Dick goes out of his way to make sure everyone who had a hand in working the broadcast gets on-air recognition. This is unheard of in media. He is a true professional and we are lucky to have him.

The Timberwolves loss has definitely been the Redbirds gain.
Eight years after I was hired by WJBC, my dream had evolved into being the radio voice of a team in the National Basketball Association. The NBA had awarded an expansion franchise to the community in which I grew up. It seemed the perfect time to attempt to make a move.

I enlisted the help of two men who played their college basketball here, Doug Collins and Jack Sikma, both of whom had, and still have, deep connections within the NBA. My uncle, a Minnesota boxing Hall-of-Famer, did what he could to sell the Minnesota Timberwolves on my abilities.

Nonetheless, the T-Wolves hired Kevin Harlan, who is now among the most prominent television play-by-play announcers in America. I was flooded with disappointment. But 30 years later, I’m thankful Kevin’s talent level was properly recognized. I have learned enough about the big-time broadcast environment to understand it is not one in which I would have flourished.

I have met Dick, and worked with him at State Farm. Truly a great guy.

What all the rest of you said and more. There is not a classier guy around. He has certainly seen a lot. The only person I ever heard of who didn’t love Dick Luedke was Bob Donewald. That’s a badge of honor right there! Seriously....what a gift we have in one of the best play-by-play guys in college basketball. The best in my opinion. I worked with Dick at State Farm and he was every bit as great a pro there as on the broadcasts. Congratulations to Mr. Luedke!

Absolute goose bumps on the replays of the NCAA game finishes, as called by Luedke.
