Welcome back Alston!! I like that he's back a lot. I always thought Alston had talent, that he just needs some different coaching, teaching and system. Listed at 6'9 230lbs he could be a beef in the paint.

Fantastic news! I would hold the other scholarship unless Howard wants to come back which looks not likely from what the staff may have told him.

He got little opportunity in the past. He's athletic. Hope he can fit into the new system. Welcome back

I like that he is coming back. I think he has a high ceiling, especially in a program that values post play.

Glad you’re still a Redbird Alston!

Agree that Alston has some untapped skill we all look forward to seeing at RA this season.

Wasn’t the knock on him his play speed? I don’t get all of the excitement for his return. While he has the size, I wanted starter size to push Lewis to the 4. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

Andrews has very slow feet and not much leaping ability. I do think he has some physical strength but personally thought he would have been better suited to move to a lower level. I hope I am proven wrong.

I agree that he definitely needs work. I believe he was brought in as a project originally, with how young he was. He was 17 when he got to campus. I like his size a a lot and speed/footwork are things that can be taught. As we get further removed from the Muller era, it’s easier to see how he really did bring talent in, but was only able to fully develop it around 15% of the time. Sometimes, kids just learn better under different teachers.

I always struggled with math in school. I had the same tutor for a couple years and it wasn’t getting any better. Down the line, I different teachers later on that I connected with and I got better. Still not a world beater by any means, but serviceable.

He doesn’t need to go out and get 20/10 every night. Know your role and what the team needs from you. Maybe it’s 10 mpg, 6 points and 6 boards off the bench. Be serviceable and do your part to help the team win, whatever that means.

Alston looked much improved this year when he got into games. He seemed to bring a spark. Here is hoping the new staff can tap into some of that potential.

I’m not sure I agree that speed or athleticism can be taught. I do agree that a new coach and system can do wonders for a player though.

My issue is this team still seems very perimeter oriented and that concerns me. We’ve lived and died by the three ball for the better part of the last 10 years, absent the Carmichael and Fayne years. I also find it interesting Coach Pedon mentioned an emphasis on interior play, but he hasn’t brought anyone in for that yet. McChesney, Kotov, and Petrakis are all 6’10 shooters more or less. Means most of the dirty work will be left up to Lewis, Schmitt, and Knight. Notwithstanding, I’m still excited for the regime change and the direction we are headed.

Oh my. Flexibility, Mobility, Strength, Power, Mechanics. All things that can be increased to make someone bigger, faster, and stronger. And yes more athletic. Can you make a kid Usain Bolt? No. That's genetics. Well, maybe DBird can. But you can make them a better version of themselves. By golly that's why we have weight rooms, strength coaches blah blah blah. No Alston will never be a sprinter, but he will absolutely develop as an athlete and basketball player.

Do we even know what we have in Andrews? I haven’t seen enough to know if he has slow feet. What I do know is he came in at 17 and never built that on court confidence. The prior staff has never shown the ability to develop a project big. Idowu got better elsewhere for example.

I’m not expecting him to make an All MVC jump, but zero reason why he can’t become serviceable and give some solid minutes.
