Not just the seniors, but basically everyone was just granted a RS for 2020.

I'm starting to worry about the fall sports now. I just can't see people wanting (or being allowed) to be packed by the thousands into a football stadium. Maybe they should play in empty stadiums if the risk has diminished enough.

UW AD Barry Alvarez says, thanks kids, time to move on . . . . .

And UW won’t be allowing those seniors to pursue another year with their teams in 2021, according to an athletic department statement Thursday that cited “a time of unprecedented uncertainty in college athletics.”

“What we tried to do was encourage our seniors to go ahead and, if you’re going to graduate, graduate and move on with your life,” Alvarez said Wednesday on his monthly radio show on 1310 WIBA and Learfield/IMG College. “We appreciate everything that you’ve done. But move forward. The future is in question, and we can’t promise you anything.”

Interesting position from one of the big money athletic departments. If UW won't/can't do it, wonder who else will decide against it?

Larry Lyons sent out a long letter yesterday concerning this. He didn't categorically say seniors wouldn't get another year but that they are talking with each one of them, realizing that some might not want another year. So it kinda surprised me

Here's the letter

Dear Redbird Family,

As we continue to navigate stressful times and uncharted territory through the COVID-19 outbreak, I hope you and your families and loved ones are staying safe and healthy. Enjoy your time together and continue to heed the medical advice and precautions set forth so we can work together to end this pandemic and see each other soon.

In my last update, I wrote to you about what ISU Athletics was planning on doing as we moved forward and the thought process that has gone into our major decisions as a department. From canceling events and postponing seasons, to getting student-athletes moved out and locker rooms cleaned, to reworking schedules and contingency plans, it has been a constant effort from our department to ensure we are handling everything thrown our way in the best and most timely fashion. As this situation develops, we continue to focus on being dedicated to providing the resources needed for our student-athletes to be successful. I’m proud to say our academic staff has done an outstanding job remaining diligent in all facets of academic excellence and our student-athletes have responded very positively to virtual tutoring and e-learning and we are expecting another strong academic semester despite the upheaval of our normal day-to-day operations.

Our work moving forward requires constant financial analysis, something we don’t take lightly as we continue to set our department up for short-term and long-term success. The only constant in life and business is change, and that has and will continue to remain true as we move throughout this season. We continue to make decisions on how to best allocate our dollars. Included in our financial aid budget are several different components, the biggest of which is athletic scholarships. On March 30th, the NCAA ruled that any student-athlete with spring sport eligibility would be allowed to return next season with a one-year exemption. We are thankful for the chance our seniors will be afforded and will look at each of these situations on a case-by-case basis. We will have some athletes unable to return because they already accepted a career opportunity or feel it is in their best interest to move on, and we can’t thank them enough for what they did in their time as a Redbird. Others who return will continue to receive financial aid from our department. We’ve discussed various situations with our seniors who have a choice to make, with everything from student-teaching to professional sports being discussed. Our biggest concern is the well-being of each student-athlete and we will continue to meet with each virtually to work through their decision.

As a department, we are not simply trying to survive this - we are looking to get better. Our staff has done a great job with new ideas and revamping areas we felt needed work and I think we are doing our best to turn this into a positive situation. We are connecting with former student-athletes, graduates who are in the nursing field, creating content, and continually delivering our fans quality information and timely updates. You can find all of this on our various social media channels to follow along as we stay together, stay positive, and stay connected.

While this hasn’t been easy, it has allowed us to look in the mirror and improve. We will continue to manage our budget, offer excellent academic assistance, focus on improvements, and come out of this ready to make Redbird fans proud. Thank you for reading and sticking with us through this - stay safe and healthy and we hope to see you soon. Go Redbirds!

Larry Lyons
