By my count, the following players are still looking for a new home.

Drake: Deven Dahlke
Evansville: Emmette Page
Indiana State: Quimari Peterson, Dearon Tucker, Sam Mervis
UIC: Marcus Larsson, RayQuawndis Mitchell, Jalen Johnson
ILST: Sy Chatman, Julian Samuels
MOST: Melvyn Ebonkoli, Elijah Bridgers, Skylar Wicks, Isiah Mosley
MURST: Elijah Farr

AJ Green has opted to stay in the draft.
Yesterday's Indianapolis paper had a story about a group of guys working out for the Pacers, and Green was mentioned.

Pretty sure he wouldn't stay in the draft if there was a chance he wouldn't be drafted.

That makes all the sense in the world, except every year plenty of guys stay in that aren't drafted. Some are "content" to sign as free agents with some team they think they have a chance with. Others just don't "see the light". Or are "content" to head to Europe or the G-League.

60 picks in the draft. Ayo Dusunmo was the 38th pick, just for reference. 163 kids declared for last year's draft.

Fred Van Vleet opted to be an undrafted free agent as opposed to a second round pick because it allows more freedom in negotiation and where a player wants to go. It worked out well for him. To a lesser extent, Ron Baker did the same and still made around 10 mil. There are opportunities for undrafted guys from "lesser schools." Is Green going to come in and be a Klay Thompson or Jayson Tatum? No. But could he sit on a bench and cash in...it's possible. I think he goes undrafted and at least signs a two-way D-league contract. At any rate, the kid's gonna make money playing ball in some way.

With 2 hip surgeries, why waste another year in college risking an injury. Doubt another year of college is going to make him quicker.

I'm just happy the Birds won't have to defend Green next year. I hope he does well and becomes a real life example of success in the MVC can lead to greater opportunities

It’s the middle of June. If you don’t have your landing spot yet, then I don’t care anymore.

By my incredibly subjective assessment, of the 49 MVC players (including the new teams) who’ve entered and announced their commitment for the 22-23 season, 24 (~49%) have moved down from their previous spot, 14 (~28%) have moved laterally, and 11 (~22%) have moved up. The number up we would say is slightly skewed due to the three Murray State players who followed their coach to LSU.

I won’t go through how I evaluated every player but will tell you, Sheldon Edwards transfer from Valpo to Loyola was considered lateral ;)

What informed most of my down vs lateral assessment was really just thinking "would the team they are going to have the potential to win around half their games in the MVC?" If not, down. If so, lateral. The guys who moved up are pretty obvious-P6 guys.

Thanks for following along!

It looks like Julian Samuels was on a visit to UW-Platteville yesterday. Solid D-III

Thanks for all the leg work Adunk!

Now, I'd love to see an analysis on the players in and if they were considered to be moving up down or lateral and compare the two.

Small sample size, but I'd look at our guys as the following.

I'd say the following are moving "up"
Sandage (WIU)
Poindexter (VA-only cuz he was formally a walk-on)
Petrakis (WCU)

Lateral:
Burford (Elon)

Down:
Kasubke (KSU)
Knight (BYU)

Again, purely subjective and you could make arguments for anyone being categorized differently. Maybe I'll get some time this week and look around the MVC. Except MO State...they have like 14 new guys that all transferred in from D1s. They have several P5 defects. For knows how to recruit, but can he get them to play together and be an x's and o's guy? Or will he fall into the route of his mentor? Time will tell.

Maybe next year from the start I'll track players in and out. It'd be much easier to do it as it's happening versus retroactively. Not all schools have their rosters set on their site, and it's hard to tell when a kid transferred in if you don't have awareness to the whole roster.

Now that you've committed to it, I fully expect at the end of next season a saber metric-type review of which transfers improved their new teams the most and which cost their old teams the most. ;)

No quarrels with the ups and downs of the ISU players mentioned above, but one also has to keep in mind "up" to a player might be getting a chance to play some ball at ISU, rather than sit the bench at KSU (or BYU, altho Knight wasn't sitting). Likewise with our transfers out, getting the chance to start or play "real" minutes for Platteville or Quincy or what have you, might be an "up" depending on how you view playing hoops.

Absolutely, if you look at it from a players perspective, any new opportunity may be considered up for them. This is just from a fan perspective. We look at say, Emon who transferred down to D2. To casual fans, he transferred down a level. To him, he sees it as an up since he’ll get more chance to prove himself and likely retread to D1.

In Luke’s case, he one of the best Conferences in college basketball for The Valley. Fans would see it as a step down, he sees it as an up/positive because he can play more.

It’s all about the perspective. I was just looking it from the fan side of things.

Bird Friend, I can assure you there has been no commitment and the only metrics you’ll get is subjective opinion from what is probably a bias fan.
