Indiana State's Randy Miller Jr. has entered the portal. Averaged a little over 6ppg last season with the Trees and over 14ppg at NC Central a couple years ago.

1682 D1 players have entered the portal this year.

Lotsa talent, kind of a head case. Hard to know what has been going on with the Badgers, you've read about the issues between coach and at least some of the players. I don't think any of the guys Valpo got from UW are "game changers", but then again, maybe they "cut loose" under a new coach.

Here's a link to a story from today's Madison paper about the three former Badgers who ended up at Valpo. May be behind a paywall for you, sorry if it is. I have my doubts how much any of these guys will contribute. Trevor Anderson played at UWGreen Bay as a freshman, came to Madison and ended up playing some, thru injuries. Gutty kid, not flashy. Averaged 14 minutes per game last year, 3 points per game. He could play a "steady" game in the Valley. I doubt he would be a big scorer, but maybe. Joe Hedstrom, 7 footer, hardly saw the floor - played in 9 games for 16 minutes total. Year before, played in 6 games then had knee surgery. Didn't look impressive to me, but maybe the injury took it's toll. Kobe King looked pretty decent as a freshman, then got injured. Soph year was promising if not productive (4 points per game). Was looking pretty good in 2019-2020, then left the team halfway thru. Committed to Nebraska, then backed out. Spent a year at Mankato St. but didn't play ball. Could realize potential, or on the other hand, continue looking like a head case. I'd say he has the best promise to contribute at Valpo.

Thanks for tracking this and the other "ear to the ground" stuff you do. Not sure how you're classifying the moves, but I think it's interesting that 75% of our guys moved "up", at least as I would assess it. And we had a "crap" team, most of us would agree, I think. Hard to figger . . . And as much as we bitch about "churning" of the roster (and I include myself), we lost relatively few guys compared to other schools.

Another project would be to look at the incoming, and see how many are movin up, down or sideways. It would help speak to the whole unlimited transfer issue and whether, like I (and others on the board for sure) have thought, there'll be plenty of guys moving "down" from P5 teams to get a chance as move up to get an opportunity. So, we've got incoming from Utah St., Appy St., Tenn St., Des Moines CC. Couple up and a couple sideways?

And as an aside, why is it Diss Plains (Des Plaines Chicago burb) but Duh Moin (Des Moines in Ioway)??? Crazy stuff.

Of the five that “moved up”, it’s interesting that three of them are Redbirds. Says a lot about Muller that he arguably lead the league in talent, but couldn’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag.

Takes more than three good players to be a good team.

Maybe, but if you’re leading the league in talent, as evidenced by the fact that we had more hi-level P5 transfers than any other program, then one would think said program must have been competive - right?
The truth is we consistently played as if all our transfers we’re going to NAIA.

Maybe Dan developed those players so they were attractive to other teams😎 We will get to see how good those teams are when the season starts.

Since ADunk provided a rundown of all the MVC transfers, I thought I'd see how things ended up with transfers overall . . .

The data below comes from Verbal Commits. The data includes all D1 transfers currently still listed as transferring or committed. It doesn't include players who entered the portal and then pulled out to remain at the same school. The data* may include players who didn't pull their names from the portal but who've opted to go juco. It does include players who've decided to move on to play professionally or to begin a different career, but didn't pull their names out.

Total D1 transfers: 1748
  • Committed to a new school = 1318
  • Uncommitted at this time = 430*
    • Seniors/RS Seniors = 124
    • Juniors/RS Juniors = 122
    • Soph/RS Soph = 83
    • Frosh/RS Frosh = 101
  • Uncommitted players by position:
    • Centers = 44
    • Point Guards = 119
    • Shooting Guards = 135
    • Power Forwards = 83
    • Small Forwards = 49
  • Uncommitted players by recruiting rank:
    • 5-Star = 0
    • 4-Star = 12
    • 3-Star = 28
    • 2-Star = 390

Interestingly, Mark Freeman was a 3-star recruit coming out of high school. Dedric Boyd and Keith Fisher were 3-star recruits, while DJ Horne and Dusan Mahorcic were 2-stars. Which just proves that you really can't tell how good a player will actually be based on how many stars they have listed by their names on Verbal Commits.
