Zion Griffin, 6-6, Hinsdale South

The talent: A Hoops Report favorite since breaking out last December and a top 10 prospect in the Class of 2018, Griffin was sensational in the opening period. He showcased his high motor, terrific basketball body and high-level athleticism. But it’s the continued improvement he shows with his shot that jumps out at you. Griffin has legit three-point range and showcased it all weekend, becoming a legitimate threat from beyond the arc.

The skinny: In the City/Suburban Hoops Report’s pre-July under-recruited story it was stated that Griffin’s offers would triple as July played out. Griffin’s recruitment, after just one weekend, has gone to another level. Illinois State, Drake, Southern Illinois, Loyola, UW-Milwaukee, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Toledo all offered Griffin over the past few days, joining a group that already included UIC, Western Michigan, UTEP and Wright State

This guys recruiting is blowing up. He had something like a 45 point and 38 point performance with double digit rebounds in an AAU showcase. Hendrickson wrote a very positive article about him.

Henricksen now rates him above Finke

I'm ready to roll the dice on another Griffin. Another lefty.

Be interesting to see how our 2018 commit class pans out. Currently, only two scholarships to work with between now and then. Two walk-ons on the current roster vying for them. Assume we'll have our annual share of defections as well.

Yak the lead one on Zion too. Move along.
Why? Why move along? So he has some nice offers. Are you suggesting we just throw in the towel for any guys with "better" offers? Might as well pack it in and go D2.

Not saying we shouldn't go after high quality players, but Zion has garnered a lot of P5 attention, including Kansas. So if Kansas is getting involved why wouldn't Michigan, who has two of the coaches from here who were actively recruiting him?

Honestly, I think you are saying we shouldn't go after players when P5s start getting involved. You can't sign players if you don't recruit or quit recruiting. Until the player says "move along", you keep going after him. Even then you keep in touch, just in case.

Giving up the fight is a nice way of saying we're comfortable being an occasional contender for a Valley title.

Also, as we have seen before, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Say he goes to KU, doesn't play, gets recruited over, etc- where may be a place he looks if he decides to transfer? I.E. Milik... can't hurt to keep recruiting guys like this for future possibilities.

Also, so called power schools may have him on their board as a second or third fall back option.

Would have been nice to see him in a Redbird uniform, just don't think we can out recruit KU and a host of other P5s.
