As a UW fan would you rather be a part of the coast to coast Big 10 or a regional Big 12? Some of the commenters are stuck in tradition of the Rose Bowl. That tradition got turned over awhile ago. If I recall, UW played TCU in the Rose Bowl. Talk about non traditional. When this shakes out UW will still get their rivalry games with Minny, Iowa, and Nebraska. This might actually help UW get in the football play off. This will force the play off to expand. UWs chances making it how it stands is almost zero.
Well, I know these are pretty much "get off my lawn" answers, but, I would rather be part of a regional Big 10, ten teams, no Ruggers, no Maryland, no Penn State. No Nebraska for that matter. Wouldn't bother me one bit to return the Rose Bowl to PAC 10 vs. Big 10, which it really is most years. Relatively few "non-traditional" games over the years, except when the Rose Bowl is one of the playoff games. Don't need conference expansion to expand the playoffs, just need to end the greed.

I wasn't specific enough in my earlier post, my UW season tickets are basketball, not football. I'm not all in, die hard, UW football. I pay attention, but I haven't been to a game in quite a while.

Sports at ISU and many other schools will not matter if 2-3 superconferences split away

And, the o ly way they will ever matter is to get there through the football program. It's doubtful whatever playoff they come up with for basketball won't include any outsiders.. I do believe the big east will be absorbed by power conferences

The Big East has no FBS football outside of Connecticut and i just dont see the financial incentive to bringing the entire league over. A school or group of schools need to generate more revenue then they dillute from the rest. I think at best they take 2 to 4 teams like Villanova. Why would they want to take teams like DePaul ... for the Chicago TV market? It's been way too long since DePaul has had a consistent following and the entire Big Ten and Notre Dame capture a significant share already.

You said it and I agree. Football is the primary driver of this runaway train. Perhaps a few FCS Big East teams step up their football programs (see Villanova again). I think schools with no football could be impacted detrimentally even if they have good basketball programs.

It keeps coming more apparent that there ultimately will be a split. We know which side of the fence ISU will be. There are schools scambling to position themselves better. Do the Arizona schools make a pitch for SEC or do they take an easier route and go Big 12. Buckle down and hang on ... here we go again.

I'm not sure why they would want "outsiders"? Georgetown? Uconn? Villanova? They don't need these schools to run a successful basketball tournament. Get a 35 team Big Ten and a 35 team SEC. There's your tournament right there. Instead of #1 Arizona vs #16 Wright State it will be #1 Arizona vs #16 Minnesota. There will still be a NCAA tournament for the Big East and others left behind.

This West Virginia fan on @RedditCFB really summed up the long-term cost of conference realignment perfectly. https://t.co/C6f0oUeqMv

I think a lot of fans feel this way. Perhaps this is what Madbird was expressing
The WVU poster is not seeing the big picture. The Big Ten will grow to the point where they will have a West, Mid West, and East divisions. The rivalries will remain. WVU should have joined the ACC. It would be interesting to see why they were left out of that expansion. I will assume academics, mediocre athletics and TV audience were the reasons. That's WVU's own fault for stepping out of their geographical footprint without any partners. But I am thinking they didn't have a choice because of football. The Big 10 will never want them and the ACC clearly doesn't want them. WVU is more than likely going to be excluded from the SEC expansion too. If Penn State wanted to play WVU in football, they would. PSU is 48-9 against WVU in football, that's not a rivalry! WVU is playing VT in football this year. Doesn't seem that PSU really cares about WVU? Instead? They schedule a game at.....Auburn! I would bet the Big Ten told UCLA/USC last week that they will have other schools coming aboard from the PAC 12 very soon. WVU poster sounds like a bitter fan whose team is going to be left out again!

I just spent 15 minutes watching this. It’s the best conglomeration of relevant factors to university presidents I’ve seen.

Yes, but now they have an opportunity to move up. They likely won't even be allowed to play those teams anymore.
We really don't play those teams now. Once a year in football? Maybe? And why do we play those games? Not because of rivarly. Not because we are hoping for an invite to a bigger conference. One reason and one reason only. $$$. Instead of UW, U of I, OU, or Iowa... Iowa State, Kansas State, Memphis, Tulsa, etc... can fill that void. There will be plenty of P5 and mid/lower level FBS schools left behind for us to play.

Big 10 West
UCLA
USC
Washington
Oregon
Stanford
Cal
Colorado
Utah or Kansas
Arizona
Nebraska

Big Ten Mid West (The Get Off My Lawn Division)
Wisconsin
Iowa
Northwestern
Illinois
Purdue
Indiana
Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Minnesota

Big Ten East
Notre Dame
Penn State
Rutgers
Maryland
PITT
Virginia
UNC
Duke
Miami, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Boston College, Clemson (Choose 2)

Play your 9 division teams and 3 cross overs (I am not sure if that math works??). Talk about spiking the TV ratings in September. Instead of Michigan playing Colorado State, Hawaii, and UCONN. They cross over and play Oregon, UCLA, and Notre Dame. Ohio State plays Penn State, Miami, and USC. Wisconsin plays Stanford, Virginia, and Washington instead of ISU, Washington State, and New Mexico State.

Basketball? Play everyone in your division twice and play 9 crossovers (hold 8 team shootouts over 2 days in Chicago, LA, Denver, NYC, etc... Once again, I am not sure about the math on this) plus a Hawaii, Caribbean, Cancun, etc.. tournament.

Wisconsin Non Conference Sample (The crossover games would not count towards the conference record. Bring the top 4 teams from each division to the conference tournament.)
Battle 4 Atlantis (3 games)
Duke (Home)
PITT (Away @ United Center)
Arizona (Away @ United Center)
UCLA (Home)
Colorado (Away)
Notre Dame (Home)
Oregon (Home)
UNC (Away)
Utah (Home)
@MadBird - How do you like your basketball season tickets now? AND you get the old Big Ten all at home!

Why not? The Big 10 and SEC already have more teams in their conferences than they can play in football and they still schedule FCS games. The reason is simple. If you're in the middle to bottom of the conference you're looking to get to a bowl game. An FCS win helps. If you're in the middle to top you're trying to make the College Football Playoff. You can only lose 1 to 2 games at the most. You want an easy win that's almost a bye week. Alabama likes to schedule their FCS game before playing a tough opponent the following week. In '21 it was FCS Mercer before Florida. This year it's Austin Peay before Auburn. It will also come late in the season so they will have an easy game before Auburn, the SEC Championship game and the CFP. Even Notre Dame is giving in to FCS football. They play Tennessee State 9/2/23
