Prohm is obviously a good fit but man, how awkward would it be to leave your wife for some hot new thing, then the new girl dumps you, and then come back your original spouse? Tale as old as time?

What if he has some success at Murray again? Does the cycle repeat? What if he has a couple of slightly below .500 seasons? Would Murray be quicker to move on since he burned them in the past? It'll be a fun story to watch.

They seem pretty excited about joining the Valley and bringing their latest rival(Belmont) with them. They travel well and I had a couple tell me they already had their St. Louis trip booked. Expect their fan base to bring a little swag and cockiness just like their players. It should be fun.

I also attended the games in Indy. Murray State’s fan base has been dying to get into our league for years.

Prohm is a great hire. He coached 2 top-25 teams there.

Seems like the wife is welcoming him back. And I gotta think she knows what can happen in the future.

The Prohm thing is crazy as well especially with rumors that he was trying to sniff around the ISU job. Could be fun to watch the next few years how Prohm does and how Pedon does at ISU.

I wouldn't think it is too often that a coach leaves a school for 5 times his salary and then comes back. It is not new to Murray State to have coaches leave to bigger programs. I think they take a little pride in saying they had Billy Kennedy, Mark Gottfried, Steve Prohm and Mick Cronin. I think they would gladly take Cronin back from UCLA. Would the Salukis take Bruce Weber back? Ten years ago, would ISU have taken Stallings back? or Porter( even though we fired him). The unusual part to me isn't that Murray State wanted him back, but the odd part is Prohm wanted to come back.

Did Prohm want to come back or was it that he was just wanting a job. Going 2-22 (0-18 in conference) his last head coaching opportunity probably weren't a lot of places knocking on his door to give him a chance. Murray State is perfect place because it worked before, why not again and you can keep the same system that he established before he left. Odd yes but perfect for both places, I guess right time and right place for both parties.

Prohm wanted the job here. He threw his name into consideration for than ISU actually being interested.

Coach Henson retired at IL and then went back to New Mexico State and coached for nothing. Stabilized the program then retired again.

Murray State has now lost 9 players total to the transfer portal. They will have a complete new team next year for their first year in the Valley.

- NCAA team with a win
- Coach that got them to a high level of success coming back
- No real losses due to graduation

And NINE players decide "I can get something better". Give me a break. The ISU/Murray St/UNI/whatever mid major you want to list have ZERO chance of sustained success. Zero. Maybe you get a year. Maybe. Even with that, you can lose an entire team in a matter of two weeks. It's really killing my interest.

Murray will be okay. They're still a top "mid major brand." In recent years to you see teams like Loyola and VCU who are at the Birds level and have sustained success. It is possible, but you have to build a culture of pride and playing for the name on the front instead of the back. I know many think "culture" is over used and doesn't really mean anything, but it does. Look at Loyola. They lose a lot of talent and experience next year so I expect a bit of a drop off but their top players aren't getting poached. They have not had the transfer issues that other teams have had-even through a "coaching change." Wichita State had the same level of success by keeping teams together. Marshall is a creep but something about him kept his guys together.

Build a culture that players want to be apart of and you'll be successful. Yes, it's much harder at this level with guys in your best player's ears all year but it starts with getting the right people in the door. Muller's best season was built with guys here 4 years. Loyola's success the last three years has been with guys there 3-5 years.

UNI tends not to have guys transfer out either. St. Peter's success in the NCAA's was on the backs of juniors and seniors.

St. Pete is actually a school I feel bad for. Loyola, VCU, and Wichita State's Final 4 run paid off for all of their schools. Coaches came back and that impacted recruiting to when the coach does move on, there isn't a ton of drop off. St. Peter's on the other hand, had one year of success and they will be back to irrelevance and unlikely be able to capitalize on their Elite 8 year.

College bball as we once knew it is dead. Teams that don't have NIL $$$$ to throw at kids will be left farther back in the dust. If a kid blows up here or at Murray St. he will be, more than likely, poached by a bigger program. Don't hate the kid, hate the system.
