I figured this was going to happen. It's still disappointing. I wonder what would have needed to happen for him to stay.

Iowa State won 2 games last year and now they are in the Sweet 16. It can be done in ONE year.

We don't have any NIL money. Players can earn it though.
The athletic department makes deals with companies is how I understand it. The schools still can't pay student athletes. I would think most P6 schools have a person that works on this as their job. I'm thinking we don't.

Schools don't make the deals. They have a point person that advises athletes, organizations, and businesses what is legal.

As far as my understanding, that is correct. The school really isn't involved at all in the day-to-day specifics of NIL. The players essentially operate independently with guidance from someone in compliance on what is allowed. Players are not allowed to use the school's logo with NIL. For example, if Reeves was a spokes person for Rivian, he could not wear ISU gear in the commercial. He could wear a generic red track suit or whatever but not team apparel. When Fleming released his clothing line, he used pictures of him playing basketball in what was clearly a Redbird uniform but he had to edit out the name on the front and logo on the shorts.

NIL rules are pretty loose from what I can tell. If any alumni or local business owners with deep pockets want to see the program have the turnaround that Iowa State did, they should open their check books. Get Rivian to endorse the top 6 or 7 guys that Pedon wants to bring in at 50k/year....

Strong coming back? I like Jo a lot, but he’s so streaky. When he’s on he’s unstoppable . . . but when he’s off he’s full stop.
I wouldn't put too much stock in what the Goredbirds roster looks like on March 24. Logistically during this "quiet time" it make sense to build out the page with how things stand right now. That way you can simply go in and remove/add players as necessary.

There are some guys I would like to see back but won't be too torn up if they don't return. Strong was best when he was the spark off the bench and it was a role that he really seemed to buy in to. If he's back, I'd hope he returns to that role or develops his game to be a 3 level scorer. He, like Reeves, would be one that would do much better in an offense where screens are set off the ball for shooters.

Jo was the team‘s best three point shooter last year right around 41%. There were several guys that shot the three well including the small sample of Howie at 40%. At full strength this team could score.

Jo would do great using multiple layered screens as would have Tone. I would have tried to run the Hersey Hawkins special for both of them where there would be triple screen action to get them a free look. DM never ran that and it is an NBA old style offense. Jo kept us in many games even if streaky and his defense really improved.

He'll be on his third D1 school. Started at Northern, then Balls Tate. Interesting enough, Nana Akenten, a former HS teammate of Tyler is also in the portal. Birds recruited him out of HS and he'll be on his third school as well (Nebraska, SEMO).

It'll be interesting to see who Pedon brings in. I'm not sure you can build a "winning culture" with guys on their third stop in as many years- See Zach Lofton.
