COVID19 hitting Iowa State

I am laughing at that person's "drama" over it, especially given the recent weeks society's activities and non-compliance on social distancing.

Quin, viruses are going to do what viruses do best; that is infect people to live and reproduce. The record states that only small pox has been successfully eradicated. No other virus or disease has been eradicated, despite efforts to do so. Remember the H1N1? If you get a flu shot, then you get a strain of the H1N1.

Unfortunate as it is, this will spread to most everyone on this planet because of how easily transmitted it is. What we know so far, is if you are in good physical shape, healthy, strong immune system, practice good hygiene, and a little luck, then you are highly likely to survive, which there are many. But in reality, that goes for just about any virus/disease/bacteria.

If you believe the comment of "real threat to our department" just now, then it is and will be a threat to every department, every business, every school, and so on. I do not believe it to be. I am actually more concerned for those that are furloughed, laid off, going mental, suicides, divorce rates, spousal and child abuse, and all of those items trying to coop up people in their houses. Indiana suicide hotline use to get 1,000 call a day, now it hovers over 20,000 a day.

So no, I am not worried about Iowa State's student athletes, who are more than likely in their prime fitness, great nutrition, and not in the high risk fatality grouping. Thus, I am laughing at the drama comments.

Have I missed news stories about 100,000 deaths just in the last three months from suicides and from "any" virus or bacteria other than COVID-19???

You would think that might have been mentioned by somebody.

It is being mentioned and reported. Did you also miss the reporting on doctors in California are now on record as being "pressured" to put down COD as Covid-19 without any proof that it was Covid-19? BTW, CDC is not reporting 100,000 deaths either. I am not sure what news stories you look at. But here are a few for suicide increasing, and as mentioned, more suicide deaths than Covid-19 deaths in certain areas:

Did you also miss the news stories about home abuse and divorce rates are on the rise? Did you know that for child abuse, schools are one of the biggest helpers in identifying and helping those in that situation?

So yeah, "

“The virus is here and a real threat for our department.”
:ROFLMAO:

The virus is here, and it is not leaving. Just like H1N1 did when it hit the scene (almost 70 million infected in the US in the first year). Looks like Iowa State is following the generally accepted protocol when someone tests positive (I did not see if this was a confirmed test or just a symptomatic test).

H1N1 killed approximately 12,500 in the US. COVID 19 just passed 109,000.

I’ll do something I don’t normally do and move this to off topic. It’s not about Iowa St anymore but I’ll allow it as long as it doesn’t get political.

RT was formerly known as Russia Times. The NYPost is a sensationalist "news" outlet. And the Washington Examiner is a right-wing "news" outlet. So, you've offered some fairly biased points of view. Do you have anything from JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, or other strongly reputable medical news outlets?

Are you trying to appeal to authority here? Are you saying that what is printed is untrue and those that work on those lines that get the data the fastest/quickest in their respective areas are not valid? Are you saying that there has been no impact to the other areas of society? As an example, are you saying that the suicide prevention number in Indiana stating that they went way up is incorrect and those people cannot look at a call log and read it properly? Are you saying the people that are quoted stating what has happened in prior events and seeing the rise during those events are incorrect? This is based on passed events, not "modals", like we saw with Covid-19 from those "experts". You can wait 6 months to a 1 year before something is "printed" in JAMA ect.

I gave some where it is reported. There are others, but I am not going to sift through to appease anyone. It may be in the other areas or out in 3 months, but use your logic here. Believe what you want.

Do you realize 2 things on H1N1. 1, H1N1 still circulates and kills a lot of people during the "flu" season each year (also part of your "flu" shot) and as a virus, it mutates. 2. The H1N1 tracking during that 2009 found that 80% of those deaths were below 65 years of age, speculated that those older had some type of the strain and developed immunity from something similar in the past.

Who is Covid-19 hitting the hardest, and it is not even close, age group, health wise, current underlying conditions, ect? Once you research that one on your own, then come back.

The whole is situation is horrible. I wish it never happened. I, as well as many others, like their situation before all of this. But it is here and the best thing for myself is to understand the danger and weigh the costs of decisions for those I am responsible for.

But circling back to Iowa State, yeah, if their donor base is 65+, then I can see it being a serious threat to the department.

I'm saying your sources are suspect. You might also want to actually check the medical and science journals to see what's being published before you make blanket statements. MSM (regardless of leaning) are looking for clicks, so they offer links to whatever studies/opinions will generate clicks from their target audience. g

NEJM is currently publishing articles on COVID-19.

JAMA is currently publishing articles on COVID-19.

The Lancet is currently publishing articles on COVID-19.

Nature is currently publishing articles on COVID-19.

Science is currently publishing articles on COVID-19.

Need me to go on? C'mon, Ghost, you're smarter than this.

From today's Madison paper. Must be very senior seniors to fit the "at risk" population some of our "experts" say is all we need to worry about:

With college athletes returning to campuses for workouts, the number of positive COVID-19 tests is rising. Alabama reportedly had five football players test positive.

Birdfriend, that is a terribly wrong/bad assumption that I do not know about the MSM. I did read the headlines, I looked at specific content/facts, not the thinly veiled opinion parts. Is this not called a micro-aggression? I need my safe space.

You still have not countered anything I said here. You can worry about the 65+ crowd. I will worry about the millions of the newly unemployed who stress over their unplanned situation. And finally, you can believe what you want and do as you need to be in your best situation.

I mean, I could go back to pointing to how the MVC was in decline, predicting the one bid league status (came true) based off of evidence and facts, and a whole host of others that are still holding true. But nah, that is so 6-8 years ago ;)

Sorry, according to Birdfriend, that is unreliable.

Link? You may be misunderstanding something. I already stated just about everyone is going to get it (I do believe it will go into future flu shots). Are you conflating that with the at risk fatality grouping? Like I said, I am not worried about the college athletes who are in their physical primes.

The Moral Dilemma. This is what I have a hard time coming to terms with. I have no problem putting myself at risk. But by putting myself at risk I'm putting others at risk. That I have a hard time with. So yeah I'm wanting to go to the Illinois game. But is that the right thing to do knowing I can literally, unknowingly infect and kill someone else, say 10 days later, and never know I had it or passed it on. So the "stats don't mean shit to me. Moral Fiber?!?!
